American fighters and PT boats clashed near Rabaul New Britain in a limited engagement that cost two fighters and two PT boats. MacArthur said the incident stemmed from failed recognition signals. one PT boat grounded on a reef and both sides exchanged fire.
Butte aims to hire returning servicemen with an ambitious postwar program. Mayor Barry OLeary urged immediate city improvements including dredging Silver Bow creek, a new trunk sewer, bridges, sidewalks, sewers, storm drains, paving, street realignments, Clark park rehab and airport upgrades. Eight members of a Navy Catalina patrol bomber who spent seven hours failing to rescue six airmen adrift in Aleutian waters returned to Seattle and chose not to return to their North Pacific base.
