Butte Central hosted the annual zone track meet at Clark Park. Danzie of Dillon won the high hurdles and broad jump, setting meet and state records. Butte led with 564 points to Anaconda's 19.
A brief report notes a Butte High student winning the state speaking contest amid a national tariff debate. The Pacific Northwest Medical and Surgical Association convention in Butte adds Dr. Meyer Wiener, ophthalmology professor at Washington University Medical School, to its speaker list. He will address July 1 2 and 3 on Intraocular Operations Care of Eye Injuries and Plastic and Cosmetic Eye Surgery. Wiener, born 1876, is described as a leading surgeon in his field.
Whitefish High School won the state scholarship contest at Montana State College scoring 29 points with Miles City second and Havre third. Harry Hoffner of Butte won the extemporaneous speaking contest and a four year scholarship. Sam Eagle of Bozeman won the pentathlon with 463.86 points and received a four year scholarship and a gold medal. Duane Dugan of Whitefish and Stuart Mackenzie of Havre placed second and third in the pentathlon. A one year scholarship went to Sam Eagle.

On May 3 in New York the stock market plunged as marginal accounts sold off and bears drove prices downward in a fast two hour Saturday session. Total volume reached a Saturday record of 4,876,530 shares amid one of the market’s wilder weeks.
Springfield May 3 In a novel move to enforce prohibition laws by confiscation of farms on which liquor is distilled by a tenant two Illinois farmers faced loss of their land to the government. Libel action in federal court by Walter M Progin United States district attorney seeks forfeiture after federal raids this week seized a 75000 illicit distilling outfit on the 420 acre farm of Joseph Englehaupt.
Wheat authorities in the United States and Canada face a bleak outlook as May prices hover near a dollar a bushel in Chicago. Canada projects a carryover of 115 million bushels by August 1, factoring in US stocks. Export needs to reduce this carryover look unlikely, while US export pace must outstrip last year to avoid a larger July 1 stockpile. Argentina and Australia are expected to pull back from the market before harvest. Continued on Page 23, Col. 2.
Fred Snow about 55 is in serious condition at Deaconess hospital after a collision with a car driven by William Atkinson of 1119 Yale avenue. The wreck occurred near Amherst and Gladstone before 8 o clock with Snow’s vehicle overturning. Deputy sheriffs say Atkinson traveled south on Gladstone while Snow entered from Amherst. Weather: Montana showers Sunday, cooler east of divide, Monday mostly fair.

Silver Bow county taxpayers paid 107000 less to operate the county offices and for all county expenses in 1928 29 than in 1924 25. The board of county commissioners said last year’s expenditures were down over 340000 from a decade earlier. The largest cut occurred in outside poor costs from 110000 to about 34000, with elections costs down nearly 22000, part of an economy budget program guiding the coming fiscal year. Four men died and four were injured when liquid oxygen tanks exploded during blasting at Consolidated Stone company quarry near Upton Kentucky. Victims include George McDougal Charles Hornback Robert Hornback and John Larrier of Nortonville. Two seriously hurt.
Niagara Falls authorities announced discovery of letters and cult documents linking Antonio Melidano to the so called Order of the Black Mask. Mrs Elizabeth Mowrey says she was held prisoner nearly a year in Melidano's apartment before being rescued after she threw a help note from a window. Melidano faces a kidnapping hearing next week, delayed this morning.
Dwight W. Morrow announced he will seek the Republican senatorial nomination from New Jersey within 10 days and run for both the short term to March 1931 and the six year term starting 1931. He declined the offer to resign and allow the governor and senator to appoint him. The move aims to enter the Senate by December session if elected.
Three consecutive days bring twins to Butte families at St. James hospital. A boy and girl were born to Mr and Mrs W A Myers at 833 North Wyoming street yesterday. The eats of a boy and girl born Friday to Mr and Mrs Edgar Denny of 1005 Emma street. Two sturdy boys were born Thursday to Mr and Mrs Fred Williams of 698A West Galena.
National Parks Airways reports April passenger traffic between Great Falls Butte and Salt Lake City more than doubled from March and nearly five times the level a year ago. No flight failures. mail volume rose slightly. If trend continues, double daily service may begin before fall with the route continuing after lighting.
