Storms halted Alan B. Shepard’s Redstone launch for a suborbital flight from Cape Canaveral delaying the first U S spaceman’s ascent. Officials cited foul weather and a damaged liquid oxygen line prompting a 48 hour minimum delay with potential for longer postponement if ships and recovery logistics falter.
Peiping radio reported the Pathet Lao ordered a cease fire as of 8 a m Laos time, effective in areas around Vang Khu and the Nam Lik River Valley. Vientiane officials said a provisional regional truce was arranged during cease-fire talks with the Pathet Lao and government representatives.
President Kennedy meets the National Security Council amid reports of a partial Laotian truce. Aimed at Laos and the nuclear test ban talks, the sessions include Arthur H. Dean and John J. McCloy. A proposed 14 nation Geneva conference would address Laos political future.
The Army reports a captain and three sergeants serving as U S advisers to the Royal Laotian Army have been missing since April 22, marking a second such incident in the Lao tian fighting. An unarmed U S transport was shot down on March 23. only one of seven aboard survived. Major Lawrence R Bailey parachuted into rebel hands and is presumed a prisoner.
An explosives expert testified that British safe crackers used lollipop sticks to insert temporary explosives into locks. Howard J. Yallop of the ammunition research department identified the technique during the trial of an accused safecracker in London.
A head on collision four miles east of Raynesford killed a third person, with earlier deaths of Paul H. Ferrell and Violet Ferrell of Keddie California and Lois Bobick, the car’s driver. The two-ton truck was a Minuteman project vehicle driven by Serverino Sciuchetti of Great Falls who had been fined for speeding hours earlier. An inquest is set for Wednesday afternoon.
A Brazilian air force B25 bomber crashed after takeoff from Manaus on a training flight killing at least five air force personnel. The crash occurred in the Amazon city as investigators begin inquiries into the incident.
Montana forecast shows east region mostly cloudy with scattered showers Wednesday increasing Thursday. Temperatures dip to 28 to 38 at night and 50 to 60 in highs Wednesday, then 40 to 50 in the north and 50 to 60 in the south Thursday. West region sees mostly cloudy skies with showers Wednesday and Thursday and cooler highs around 45 to 55 Thursday.

Interior Secretary Stewart Udall disclosed a close associate used his name to solicit oil and gas industry figures for 100 dollar tickets to a May 27 Democratic dinner. Udall condemned the effort as unauthorized and embarrassing and said the actor would withdraw the letter and undo the harm.
Henry J. Kaiser Jr. died Tuesday night after an extended illness in Oakland California. He was 44 and the son of industrialist Henry J. Kaiser Sr. He served as vice president and director of Kaiser Industries.

A Tuesday meeting chaired by Mayor Griffith with Anaconda leaders set actions to submit plans for a metropolitan sewage system street work vocational school improvements parks and a garbage disposal plant to reduce air pollution.
Government data show unemployment fell by 533000 in April from 5495000 to 4962000 as mild weather helped hiring but basic economic improvement remains elusive. Employment rose 218000 to 65734000 while the labor force shrank by 315000, long term and very long term jobless total rising to 2128000 and 923000 respectively.
The State Department said Fidel Castro is further along the Communist road than most Red rulers. It cited Cuba’s one party election system and mass rallies as evidence and warned Cubans risk jail or death for dissent. The Kennedy administration still hopes to topple Castro after the recent Cuba invasion.
In Phoenix the AP reports Morris Udall, a Tucson attorney and Stewart Udall's brother, held a narrow lead in Arizona's 2nd Congressional District special election as returns came in. His challenger was Republican Mac C. Matheson, a Tucson businessman.
The Metal Trades Council of Anaconda will file an unfair labor practice charge with the NLRB in Seattle alleging refusal to bargain in a dispute with Anaconda Co. The union warns of a unilateral change in working conditions with a supervision shift from foremen to overseers under a preventive maintenance system.
Kennecott Copper Corp raised its price to 30 cents per pound effective Wednesday becoming the latest major producer to lift copper prices. Phelps Dodge remains at 29 cents with American Smelting & Refining Co Anaconda and others matching the move as custom smelters join the higher price due to demand and potential future shortages. Contracts at Kennecott western mines expire June 20 raising prospects of a strike.
