Allied forces receive unconditional surrender of German Italian armies
Nearly one million German and Italian troops in northern Italy and western Austria capitulated unconditionally, ending the Italian campaign. Surrender documents were signed at Caserta near Naples and became effective at noon Wednesday. The move covers about 20 000 square miles and opens southern routes toward Germany, with New Zealand and Tito forces advancing near Trieste.
