The Butte Teachers Union readies a second city strike after stalled talks. The union seeks a 20 percent wage rise while the board offers about 8.4 percent including automatic longevity increments. Both sides cite cost of living and recent area settlements as context. The board may seek a court injunction ahead of a possible Monday action.
In Washington, the House and Senate advanced higher deficit goals with Ford arguing a $60 billion cap. Senate approved 67.2 billion and House set near 368 billion in spending as lawmakers weigh tax closes and pension raises.
James Carden former Montana Workmen's Compensation official sues Atty. Gen. Robert Woodahl and aides in Butte federal court accusing unlawful subpoenas and publicizing private information. He seeks 1.3 million total with 300000 actual damages 500000 general and 500000 exemplary. He alleges violations of Fourth and 14th Amendments and reputational harm. Carden resides in Oregon and is represented by James Carden of Bozeman.
President Ford vetoed a one year farm bill that administration experts said would raise federal target prices and loan rates for wheat corn and cotton and bolster federal milk price supports. Butz argued the longer run impact would raise food prices.
May opened cool in Butte with a low of 9 degrees tying the May all time low set in 1894 and equaled only by May 8 1965. The weekend snow receded as the sun shone and Thursday’s high reached 41 while the May record high is 74 from 1901.
President Ford condemns the House for denying a 327 million aid request for South Vietnamese refugees. He says the vote shows a lack of Statue of Liberty values and pledges to seek new legislation while warning he will not send U.S. troops back to Vietnam. The rejection came as Saigon fell and refugee costs are projected above 400 million.
