Fire marshal cites Butte danger spot across from McKinley

Fire marshal William Penttila named a dilapidated building opposite McKinley School as the worst fire hazard in Butte. He said buildings near Washington School are being torn down by Anaconda Company and urged action under the Universal Building Code, while noting city zoning may be needed.

Rockefeller calls for talks with China and Vietnam policy shift

Governor Nelson Rockefeller urged closer relations with Communist China and an end to the Americanization of the Vietnam War. He warned a purely military solution fails and called for combined military and civilian efforts to be reversed. The speech at the World Affairs Council in Philadelphia marked the start of his presidential campaign. He praised President Johnson for pursuing peace talks with North Vietnam and noted strong student support at the event.

Butte Airport Expansion Sees Jet Service Promised

Butte airport officials and industry executives announced full jet service for Northwest Airlines and Western Airlines, with NWA potentially starting as early as October and not later than March. The project includes a 1,300-foot runway extension to 8,150 feet, ramp and lighting upgrades, funded by a two-mill levy and higher airline fees, avoiding bonds.

J J Murphy Named Executive Director for Butte Model Cities

James Joseph Murphy, 29, of Butte, was named executive director and coordinator for Butte's Model Cities program. Announcement came from John L. Peterson, chairman, after a 14 member Model Cities Demonstration Agency meeting. The committee recommended a salary of 14,500 dollars.

Murphy to lead Butte Model Cities program

Murphy will head the Butte Model Cities effort for a one year planning period with a $12,000 research planner salary and a $9,900 liaison position, subject to HUD approval. Other staff includes clerical help and additional hires to be selected with local committee approval. Murphy anticipates strong economic impact if supplemental funding is obtained.

U S agrees on ship talk for Vietnam talks

The White House backed Indonesia s proposal to hold preliminary peace talks with North Vietnam aboard an Indonesian cruiser near the Tonkin Gulf. Hanoi favors Phnom Penh or Warsaw. Jakarta says no formal reply yet.

Montana Power seeks 5.1 million annual rate rise in Helena case

Montana Power Co opened hearings on rate hikes to raise after tax revenue by 5.1 million dollars annually. Board Chairman J E Corette and President George W O Connor testified alongside opponents including Chester Mayor William Hunt and Helena assistant city attorney William P Munich. The hearing resumes July 9 with cross examination.
