Moscow says Soviet artillery destroyed 48 enemy artillery and mortar batteries while Russian airmen shot down 24 German planes as Axis counterattacks were repulsed in the northwestern Caucasus. German claims of large Russian offensives around Novorossisk are downplayed in the Moscow bulletin.
Final instructions from Eugene Savage, county defense commander, set Monday night inspection for Silver Bow County Defense Corps. Major James R. Barker will run the inspection with Utah and Montana defense figures in attendance. Each unit receives location and reporting details for drills, posts, and coordinators.
A quiet weather bulletin notes little change in temperature for Sunday and Sunday evening. Saturday’s temperatures reach a high of 52 and a low of 37 degrees, with similar mild conditions expected into the weekend.
Paul V. McNutt, head of the War Manpower Commission, ordered a 48 hour work week for steel plants. Effective by July, the change increases production while freeing manpower for new facilities. The move follows Roosevelt’s order granting authority to set minimum hours.

Pineapple juice in No 2 size cans rises from 13 to 17 points while other pineapple sizes stay the same. Grape juice drops to 2 points per pint and 3 per quart, grapefruit and citrus juices shrink in No 2 size cans from 4 to 3 and in 46-ounce cans from 9 to 4. Tomato juice declines from 12 to 6 points in No 2 cans and similarly in the 46-ounce size.
Washington reports the second war loan drive has surpassed 16.5 billion dollars with two of the final three days. Non banking sources will account for over 12 billion, exceeding the 13 million? billion goal. Morgenthau calls for higher future goals and urges steady purchases of savings bonds and tax notes.
London reports that the British destroyer Beverley once the U S S Branch has been lost. The admiralty gave no details beyond casualties being informed. Beverley was among 50 destroyers traded to Britain by the United States in 1940.
Allied heavy bombers scored a direct hit on a 5,000-ton Japanese cargo ship in Manokwari harbor Dutch New Guinea. The vessel settled by the stern as oil slick appeared. In addition, three Japanese fighters were shot down over Bima on Soembawa island after attempting to intercept an Allied bomber. Bombers also attacked Langgoer, Gellbink bay, and Cape Gloucester, widening the strike in the area deemed a potential submarine blockade threat.
Montana youths who passed mental tests for the Navy V-12 college training program will travel to Butte from May 3 to May 8 for physical examinations and interviews at the Finlen hotel. Lt. J J McNamara leads the traveling board including Lt J E Gogg in Lt A J Porporato and medical staff. Local civic members assist, with selection aimed at officer candidate training for Navy Marine Corps or Coast Guard.

WPB Chairman Donald M Nelson created a new Office of Civilian Requirements and gave its director Arthur D Whiteside full power to speak for civilians on consumer goods and services except food housing and transportation. Whiteside gets rationing directives and rubber allocation authority superseding that of the Rubber Director. The new office sits within the WPB, replacing the old Office of Civilian Supply led by Joseph L Weiner.
U S bombers and fighters hit five Japanese bases across the Solomons with no losses reported. Heaviest strike by Liberators on Bougainville's Kieta left fires burning as 50 miles away observers still saw flames. Other targets included Numa Numa Kahili Vila Rekata Bay and seaplane base at Rekata Bay Santa Isabel Island.
Washington May 1 House tax chiefs from both parties prepared for a floor test next week swapping reports on the administration backed pay as you go compromise and the opposition skip a year plan. Democrats call the Ruml plan unfair and a political move while Republicans claim the committee bill doubles for millions of new taxpayers yet reduces 1942 taxes for old taxpayers.
Edward Galligan of Helena received the Montana Society of Engineers award at an honor assembly at Montana State College. He was one of five engineering students chosen by a faculty committee as candidates and presented the award by W. A. O'Kelly of Butte the association's president.
Allied reports say American troops seized Hill 609 and Hill 523 near Mateur during a Tunisian front push led by Lt Gen George S Patton Jr. Air forces struck Sicily Strait shipping, sinking seven vessels and hitting at least two more. British submarines torpedoed ten Axis ships as fighting continued along the Tunisian front with gains and counterattacks across Medjez-el-Bab and the Djebel Bou Aoukaz area.
Registrants from the three Butte Selective Service boards will take physical examinations at the Butte Army Recruiting and Induction center here Monday. Those successful in the physical tests will be assigned to service with either the Army or Navy forces. The registrants have been ordered to report at 7:40 Monday morning.
Thirty six seniors are candidates for bachelor of science degrees in mining engineering, geological engineering and metallurgical engineering, with three graduate students applying for masters degrees. Commencement speaker will be Capt. J. G. Atkins of Farragut Naval Training Station. The event marks a naval and military atmosphere for the war era.
President Roosevelt orders Ickes to run the strike-bound coal industry after the United Mine Workers chief John L. Lewis defies the ultimatum. About 521,000 idle miners face possible military protection if they return to work for the nation in grave peril.
Harold L. Ickes urged transportation Director Joseph B. Eastman to end all non essential railroad travel during the coal emergency. He also planned to ask WAR Production Board Chairman Nelson to declare a national aim put to conserve coal until normal production resumes.
Gault MacGowan, NY Sun correspondent, was cited for bravery Saturday after following a French attacking force and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by Gen. Henri Giraud at Allied headquarters in North Africa.
Montana hog production surged in 1942 and is expected to near one million pigs in 1943, doubling 1942 output and setting a new high. January 1 hogs totaled 307,000 valued at $6.859 million, with 118,000 sows and gilts slated to farrow. Cholera concerns and inexperienced growers temper optimism, but seed growth prospects remain strong.
