An interstate highway project in the Butte district progresses with 33 percent completion on the IS No. 15 overpass at Nissler. The new four-lane structure will replace the two-lane crossing over rail lines and Silver Bow Creek, routing traffic while the old bridge is removed.
Richard Dundas of the Montana Highway Dept reports area highway work worth 2,838,677.48 dollars is advancing despite a slow spring. Projects span Butte urban Interstate contracts, Dillon-Jackson secondary work, Wisdom Divide primary bridges, and Nissler overpasses with completion estimates ranging from 10 to 77 percent. A late May property sale aims to clear land for an Interstate through Butte.
Western foreign ministers arrived in Istanbul for a NATO meeting as student protests against Premier Adnan Menderes triggered a Turkish crisis. About 3,000 students were detained at bayonet point, with one official death and dozens injured reported amid ongoing demonstrations in Istanbul and Ankara.
Interior Minister Edgar Insfran said about 150 armed rebels were scattered with air force aid and fled to Argentina. He corrected earlier reports that Puerto Carlos Antonio Lopez and Colonia Otano were captured, noting no government casualties and three invaders wounded. The attack involved forces from Misiones and Posada border areas.
Butte Celebrations Inc. reports 10 floats entered for the Independence Day parade the earliest filing in years. City groups including the City of Butte South Side Athletic Club Camp Fire Girls Meaderville Fire Dept and others will join in a patriotic program with a free July 3 dance at Columbia Gardens and a rodeo set for June 23 25. Don Satterthwaite leads float entries and invites further entries at 3205. The Anaconda Co provides the first donation via E I Renouard.
The Coast Guard abandoned its search for Peter Gluckmann, a San Francisco watchmaker, after two days of coastlines and ocean patrols around Hawaii. Two clues—radio contact near a beach 150 miles from Honolulu and a green flare 135 miles northeast of Oahu—failed to locate him or his Beech Bonanza.
Montana east expects fair, partly cloudy North East Sunday, clouds Sunday night into Monday with a few showers in the western mountains. Highs 55 to 70, lows 20 to 40. Montana west remains partly cloudy with mountain showers Sunday afternoon through Monday, highs 55 to 65, lows around 29 to 35.
An unnamed thief met a pastor on Friday and Asst. Chief Robert Russell, leading to jeweler Paul Jordan recovering six watches and two women’s bracelets from his Park Street shop. The April 18 burglary had net loot valued at 1569 dollars and 30 cents. Russell attributed the return to the thief’s nagging conscience after the pastor meeting.
Prince Philip takes on the presidency of the Zoological Society of London a role once held by Prince Albert in the 19th century. Queen Elizabeth II’s husband assumes the post as the society continues its animal welfare research and public exhibits.
A brief dedication program is planned for the Montana School of Mines new $250 000 Student Union building on Wednesday at 2 PM as part of the annual M Day observance. The structure is complete except for some equipment awaiting delivery by late June or early July. The first event in the center will be the M Day dance followed by the annual prom. Construction was funded by an FHA loan to be repaid through self funding.
Daryl Chessman’s attorneys filed a renewed habeas corpus petition with the California Supreme Court on Saturday seeking to stay his execution set for Monday at 10 a.m. at San Quentin. The filing, signed by all three lawyers, argues new evidence challenges his guilt as the so called red light bandit. The high court, not meeting until 8 a.m. Monday, will review over the weekend as the State AG investigates aspects of the petition. Chessman held a farewell press conference claiming innocence in the sex crime convictions that produced two death sentences.
London AP reports Parliament approves a bill imposing a fine up to 140 dollars for abandoning a cat dog canary or any captive creature and up to three months in jail for a second offender. Sponsor J A Langford Holt says the bill aims to fix small wrongs in the world.
The Rev Henry Hitt Crane a Detroit pastor will deliver his first of six speeches tonight at 8 in the Butte High School auditorium The talks run through Friday with sponsor support shifting from the Butte Ministers Assn to individual ministers led by Donald L Foster The ministers insist they speak as individuals not as a formal group.
Mrs. Elizabeth M. Thompson longtime Butte resident and former secretary of the Butte Chamber of Commerce died Saturday in the Masonic Rest Home Helena after a long illness. She was 100, born 1860, survived by a son Willard and daughter in law, plus other relatives. Interment at Mount Moriah, funeral services private.
Dr. Orlo M. Brees, prominent lecture platform figure, will give Butte High School commencement address at Civic Center Thursday June 2 at 8 p.m. Principal Charles Davis reports 350 graduates. Brees’ talk titled Fences and Horizons. highlights private enterprise and the American way.
Ward Fanning is appointed business manager of The Montana Standard and The Butte Daily Post. Announcement by R. E. Morrison of Butte, manager of the papers. Fanning, connected with Butte since 1925, will also retain his position as advertising director.
