A 1.14 percent price rise through April 15 lifts farm prices to the highest level since early 1953, with overall farm income expected 5 to 10 percent higher this year. Prices paid by farmers also climb, led by fruits vegetables cotton and corn, while hogs and cattle dip modestly from mid April levels.
Eight Helena High School students were injured when a pickup carrying them blew a tire and rolled over on U.S. Route 91, 19 miles north of Helena. Driver Peter Quigley, 17, and several passengers suffered various injuries. four were hospitalized with concussions and cuts, while others were treated and released. The group was on a field trip for Vigilante Day parade preparations.
The Senate passed a fiscal 1959 Interior Dept. appropriations bill funding a $900,000 forest fire research laboratory at Missoula, plus $100,000 more for Missoula forest fire research. Montana Sens. Murray and Mansfield announced increased funds for adult Indian vocational education and a $723,000 Montana Indian reservations construction program. The bill also allocates $100,000 for Benton Lake Wildlife Refuge construction and advances to conference.
A hospital patient, Joseph Choma, 43, died when an elevator began to rise as his bed was being pushed into it after gall bladder surgery. The bed and patient were trapped between the door and the elevator floor, authorities said.
The Montana State Dental Association convened in Butte with over 150 registrants on opening day and many more expected as the 55th annual conference began at Hotel Finlen. Activities centered on social events and board discussions while a manufacturers exhibit drew interest in modern dental aids. A stag party at the Butte Country Club and a Doe party at the hotel complemented the program, with national leaders scheduled to speak as the conference continues through Saturday noon.
Albert J. Puccinelli airman first class and Army Air Force veteran of 17 years drowned while fishing in a boat on San Pablo Bay near Hamilton Air Force Base California. Coast Guard searched for the body after a heavy wave swept him overboard. Born September 18 1917 in Anaconda he served in World War II and Korea before transferring to the Air Force. Surviving relatives include his mother father several Washington DC and California relatives and he belonged to St. Peter Church. The body will be sent to Finnegan and Co Funeral Home upon recovery.
Washington unfreezes 26 million dollars of Egyptian government assets as Cairo tours Moscow, following Egypt's pledge to pay Britain and France about 82 million dollars to settle the Suez dispute. The Anaconda Company acquired Cochran Foil Co. of Louisville, a maker of aluminum sheet foil and laminated foil. All Cochran assets transferred to Cochran Foil Corp., headed by Archibald P. Cochran. Mord Lewis of Anaconda was elected vice president of the new firm. The deal closed April 30, 1958, after a Dec. 20, 1957 shareholder vote.
In Missoula a lineup is planned for Mrs. Robert Bon durant who was beaten and robbed at an Alberton tavern. She will identify her assailant from several men, including a suspect held by police. The lineup, requested by Mineral County Attorney Walter Murphy, will involve county and local authorities.
