Bozeman lawyer James H. Morrow, 51, said he would file for the Republican U S Senate nomination in the coming days. He cites Montana roots and knowledge of Montana problems, notes his past public service and campaigns, and lists his family and background.
Montana State University will end full ride athletic scholarships starting fall 1961, shifting to partial fee scholarships worth 283 dollars annually. Current sophomores and freshmen entering in 1961 will join the new program, while 85 existing full rides are reassessed and continue through their participation.
State examiner R E Towle files March report to Mayor Griffith and the city council criticizing questionable levies and payroll handling. It notes 3 mills for street lighting and hydrant rentals questioned previously, a health budget levy 1.7 mills over the limit, and improper payrolls in engineering and parks budgets.
Heavy rains flood the eastern half of the United States and drive 4,000 from their homes in Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri. Six deaths linked to floods. Anaconda Sportsmen Club announces endorsement of The Anaconda Co. for wildlife and fish conservation in the Upper Columbia River Basin. Club president Camille A. Adams says contamination in the Deer Lodge River was temporary and quickly addressed by The Anaconda Co. and state agencies. Adams cites the company’s long conservation record and lists past assistance, including funding elk planting over 30 years ago.
The Miner's Union reported 75 members at a meeting when the daylight saving resolution was passed and 1,733 signatories in favor compared with 182 against. Mayor Vern Griffith invited residents to send in their opinions on the time change.
The Montana Highway Patrol and city police will jointly check autos and licenses with road blocks set Thursday weather permitting. They will inspect licenses and equipment including brakes and city driving permits while looking for 1960 tabs. two wheel vehicles without 1960 tabs may be impounded.
Chris Stevens known as Gas Buggy was arraigned on a speeding charge in police court and convicted for exceeding the 15 mph school zone limit. Officers testified radar clocked 32 mph on West Park Street during morning traffic. Stevens said he rushed to a filling station because he was nearly out of gasoline.
Census workers will count transients Thursday night in Butte and Silver Bow County hotels motels trailer camps and other lodgings. They will hand out T Cards for guests to fill and interview arrivals and departures as part of the 1960 census effort led by district supervisor Ed DeGeorge.
Leo Joseph Schneider a 49 year old insurance man from Helena was injured in a Wednesday evening crash on U S Highway 10 near Five Mile in Butte. His 1959 Tudor car collided with a two ton ore truck driven by Roy A Kitson 49 of Alder. Kitson was unhurt. Weather conditions included slushy slick roads after an afternoon snowfall.
South Africa declared a state of emergency as Cape Town saw mass demonstrations against apartheid. Prime Minister Verwoerd warned of army involvement if citizens’ forces cannot quell disorders, while arrests rose and violence flared in Cape Province and Johannesburg.
In Montana east, expect mostly cloudy skies with scattered snow in the mountains and widely scattered showers elsewhere. Temperatures will be cooler Thursday into Friday with highs 45 to 55 and lows 25 to 35. West region forecasts mostly cloudy with rain or snow showers and little temperature change.

Glenn Chapman 28 faces a statutory rape charge in district court with an enlarged defense team after W. E. Coyle joined as co counsel. A jury of eight women and four men plus an alternate was seated as prosecutors prepare to present state witnesses, including a 16 year old alleged victim. Chapman remains in county custody after failing to post 5000 bond.
