California senator Johnson denounces opponents as misguided while asserting the president’s plan reflects the nation’s values. He argues unity and reform are essential and blames partisan obstruction for delays.
In Washington on March 30 President Roosevelt charged unnamed individuals sent telegrams to senators to defeat the government reorganiza tion bill sparking outrage from Senate opponents. Senator Johnson and Senator Wheeler denounced the remark and debated the meaning of purchasing influence while Lewis cautioned against misinterpretation. Johnson cited past pressure claims as he noted telegrams from labor groups and veterans bureaus.
Lipppmann argues the Senate finance committee’s tax bill offers the best chance for recovery and unemployment relief. He cites halted capital investment as the primary reason for low American morale, with other factors including uneven prices and wages in key industries and political deadlock on utilities.
President Roosevelt stated he has no inclination to be a dictator and lacks qualifications for dictatorship. He argued he has too much historical background and knowledge of dictatorships to desire any form of rule over a democracy. The message followed a Senate reorganization bill discussion and was delivered in a surprise, early morning letter.

A series of tornadoes swept Kansas Oklahoma Missouri Arkansas Illinois injuring hundreds and killing at least 19. In Columbus Kansas eight died with 50 buildings wrecked and Highland grade school leveled. Debris filled streets and a water shortage followed as residents rushed to safety.
Montana's spring snowstorm plummeted into slush as temps rose. Elmer Erickson, 50, a carpenter and musician, died during the blizzard and was found near Fairfield. Meteorologist W. E. Maughan called the snowfall wonderful for crops and range lands across the state benefited.
