A United Airlines 720 jet carrying 47 passengers and seven crew plunged 8000 feet after encountering an air pocket near Casper Wyoming. One man, George Wilson Graves 52 of Glenview Illinois, was killed when his head struck the cabin ceiling after he released his seat belt to reach his month old grandson. Graves wife Marjorie and other relatives sustained injuries but none were hospitalized. The aircraft resumed control and landed safely in Casper. other passengers were later flown to Chicago. Weather aloft was described as rough with a spring storm bringing snow rain and gusts up to 75 mph. radar did not detect the turbulence.
Hazen Leroy Pratt 41, a former Pennsylvanian, pleaded guilty in Anaconda to manslaughter in the March 2 traffic death of Elizabeth Moore, 65, near Galen. Judge Sid G. Stewart sentenced Pratt to one year in prison after rejecting a prior jeopardy claim.
A Delta Air Lines DC-8 crashed during a training flight near New Orleans International Airport. The aircraft hit the rear of the Hilton Inn in Kenner as it descended. Fire engulfed the area and the condition of passengers aboard was not known.
