Pittsburgh A UPI report says the Steelworkers Union reached a basic two year contract with the nation’s largest steel producers. The wage deal provides no raise in year one but includes 10 cent per hour value in benefits and a one year revisit on wages.
UPI dispatch reports mass civilian protests in Algiers over a Monday shooting that killed more than 60 Europeans. Riot police barred crowds at the post office as 60,000 French troops stood ready in Algiers and major intersections. Similar strikes and heavy patrols affected Bone and Oran amid tensions with Algerian extremists.
C O Dugger a 50 year old Washington man was killed in a two car collision two miles east of Livingston on U S 10. Frank Gregory of Livingston and Ray Fleshman also of Livingston were hospitalized but not seriously hurt. Gregory lost control of a 1955 sedan and collided with Dugger’s 1961 station wagon. Dugger became the 37th highway death in Montana for the year, compared with 55 last year.
House Republicans announced they will seek to strike the entire 1.2 billion in business tax relief from the administration bill ahead of a final floor vote. They aim to force separate votes on changes and block President Kennedy’s plan to levy withholding taxes on interest and dividends, after a 224-184 roll call.
Secretary Rusk reported to Kennedy and the NSC on Geneva talks and Berlin prospects while the U S Arms Control and Disarmament Agency awarded Raytheon a $125000 contract to work out details of a zonal inspection system for disarmament agreements.
Leaders of the Butte consolidation movement rebut Fire Department objections on tax powers and law obsolescence. Bourke MacDonald asserted the 1922 1947 1960 revised statute fits current needs and that consolidated government would wield the same taxing authority as existing cities and counties.
Cascade County Commission, after reviewing a State Welfare Board notice, cannot carry out the county welfare program in April due to a grant cut from 164,800 for two months to 86,370. They will study options while 49,800 funds Cascade County Hospital and Pharmacy operations. Weir notes salaries for March absorbed most of the grant with nothing left for April.
Partly cloudy and warmer in Butte today and Friday with highs near 40 and 45 to 55 respectively and lows in the low 20s. East of Divide and West of Divide expect mostly sunny conditions with some cloudiness Thursday into Friday and gradual temperature rises.
A Missouri court ruled the operator of a street car cannot be convicted of drunken driving. The decision affects charges stemming from a UPI report filed in St Louis.
Argentine President Arturo Frondizi faces imminent removal as army units seize the Casa Rosada and key government buildings. Gen. Juan F. A. Rawson demands Frondizi quit within eight hours, while the navy and air force coordinate a united high command. Up to date reports warn that security forces will ensure order.
The Syrian army toppled the short lived civil government in a bloodless coup and sealed off the country. Gen Abdul Kerim Zahredeen accepted resignations of President Nazim El Kudsi and Premier Marco Dawalibi along with parliament, signaling a military takeover with promises of eventual return to civil rule.
Butte school trustees approved City Supt. Charles Davis employment recommendations for 1962 63 with attached teacher lists. Davis may return as principal of Butte High School while Haney resumes duties after a leave of absence.
Outgoing Billings Mayor Carl Clavadetscher urged seriously considering city county consolidation in Billings and Yellowstone County. He warned a regional merger would face strong local resistance despite feasibility and noted Laurel and Billings could sway an election. County figures weigh 1923 law, predicting few volunteers for seven appointed posts at low salaries.
Enthusiastic acceptance of Mon tana Magicland as an economic unit marked a dinner at the Finlen Hotel. The event was hosted by the Magicland Development Committee of the Butte Chamber of Commerce with businessmen from Ana conda Deer Lodge Dillon and other area communities in attendance. Speakers included D R Campbell Jr chairing the committee and J E Corette E L Kunkel Jr H E Rakeman Don Michelson James Vanderbeck Tony Sneberger Larry Smith Dr John A Newman and Basil Andrikopoulis.
W A Emanuel Pitt, longtime Anaconda Co reduction manager, is named Montana metallurgical operations chief. E I Renouard announces Frank Day will run the plant, while Charles Holstrom becomes assistant general superintendent. Pitt, a Wisconsin graduate and former college baseball captain, will keep Anaconda HQ and add a Butte office.
