The United States cut its bid for foreign silver from 45 to 44 cents an ounce in response to Mexico's seizure of American oil properties. Treasury officials indicated the move would curb Mexico's ability to sell silver abroad and influence world prices after Washington closed its markets to Mexican metal.
The Treasury Department in Mexico City filed attachment proceedings against Huasteca Petroleum and sought a similar levy on Mexican Eagle Oil to recover alleged absentee and capital export taxes totaling 2,000,000 pesos ($489,000).
Treasury officials cut the price for Mexican silver for the first time since January 20 1936 in a move analysts say signals a weaker world silver market. The London price fell 1.7 cents as the United States hinted at leverage over Mexico in oil property expropriation and tariff barriers. Morgenthau cited stopping Mexican silver purchases as part of policy, with details limited to that statement.
Butte reported a sharp seasonal shift as a weekend warm spell ended. Snow fell steadily from morning to sunset with temperatures dropping from 54 to 19 degrees. Federal jurors convict Mrs. Lillian Mauser in a conspiracy case to violate narcotic laws. Judge James H. Baldwin schedules sentence for tomorrow morning. The trial featured a signed statement by Mauser and defense testimony by Mrs. William Neary.
The forecast calls for rain or snow in Montana with a drop in temperatures Tuesday. Wednesday remains unsettled with mixed precipitation, while the western portion warms up afterward.
Thomas A. Marlow, 177, president of the First National Bank and Trust Co. of Helena and a North Western financial leader, died after a hip fracture and stroke. He rose from an eastern farm boy to head a Montana banking dynasty and served as director of the Federal Reserve branch bank in Helena.

Forty three citizenship petitions filed in the federal court clerk's office. Examinations begin Wednesday morning at 10 o clock with Judge Lynch hearing thirty seven applicants.
A tornado struck a farming community four miles northeast of Texarkana Arkansas, killing two children and injuring ten. The storm damaged four homes and leveled power and telephone lines after 7 p m with heavy rain and lightning. The dead are two-year-old Billy Ray Davis and four-year-old Charles Barrett.
Vienna reports Austria's former chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg to be tried by Germany on high treason charges punishable by death. Hitler labels the actions treason to justify a public Leipzig trial expected this summer with wide publicity. Geering and Goering backs the plan as Nazi authorities claim a letter from Schuschnigg admits wrongdoing.
The Chinese war office in Hankow announced reinforced forces based at Kweiteh and Tungkwan broke Japanese lines recapturing five cities in retaliation for Japan's puppet government in Nanking. They said the counter offensive relieved pressure on the Lung-Hai line with multiple victories in southern Shantung and southern Shansi. Lincheng and Tsao-Chwang were retaken, I-Chow suburbs reclaimed, and Fengkiu area cleared. Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek commands 50 divisions in the drive.
