The Senate approved a bill authorizing the President to enlist 250,000 men from soup kitchens and bread lines for two years of forest labor at government expense. The chamber, in three hours, sent the measure to the House with no recorded vote as it moved toward final passage.
March 29 dispatches report Japanese forces seized a Chinese position inside the Great Wall to wipe out a sniper nest. Two Japanese officers and 19 privates died. Chinese casualties claimed at 200. Separate reports claim General Chang Tso Hsing assassinated near Peiping and clashes near Shiho left General Chen Pao Cheng dead with many aides wounded.
Yosuke Matsuoka, Japanese diplomat, told a New York Chamber of Commerce gathering that the League of Nations neglected the root cause of Far East troubles the Chinese anarchy. He argued Manchukuo is better off under the new regime and reiterated Japan’s need for Manchuria while seeking protection for Japanese interests. He admitted Japan had taken Manchuria for strategic and economic reasons.
Kiwanis club athletic committee outlined plans for the ninth annual Clark park track meet to be held in late April or early May with events for light middle and heavyweight classes. More than 300 Butte youths from public and parochial schools competed last year and Ramsay rural school will participate. Entry blanks are at the Y M C A athletic department.

President Roosevelt ordered a flat 15 percent reduction in salaries for government officers and employees starting next Saturday, extending to June 30. Culver City Cal March 28 One of George Bernard Shaws caustic remarks left film actress Ann Harding in tears. He said a play she appeared in was probably a piratical performance. Harding called it uncalled for rudeness to an organization that had admired him for years. Shaw did not realize he had upset her.
An unsettled pattern covers Montana with Wednesday showers in the western portion and cooler conditions east of the divide. Thursday remains unsettled with showers west and warmer conditions east of the divide.
A fifteen-member committee representing governors of 13 oil states major producers and independents proposed a government supervised stabilization plan. They submitted the draft to Secretary Ickes calling for drastic regulation. Independents led by John B. Elliott formed the Independent Petroleum Association Opposed to Monopoly and met with Ickes opposing federal regulation.
Helena March 28 The state board of equalization will start issuing wholesale beer dealers licenses tomorrow with 59 applicants at 150 dollars each. Applications total 256 for wholesalers hotel retail restaurant and club licenses. Chemists seek beer inspector posts to test alcohol content. Some requests seek denial of licenses due to not being in good standing.
Baltimore writer H. L. Mencken, in a colorful description, says he prefers deciding what to drink to letting politicians dictate beer quality. He condemns Americans as unworthy of fine ale and predicts the 3.2 percent beer will be subpar, prompting a vivid aside about Mt. Vernon Place as the scene shifts to continuation.
The Associated Press reports Hitler's Munich headquarters issued April 1 plans for a countrywide boycott of Jews in Germany unless the government intervenes. The manifesto says the innocent must not suffer but the guilty must not be spared and cites defense of the Nazi party against abroad propaganda. Berlin papers warn of economic ruin for hundreds of thousands of German Jews.
The Alabama Senate voted 26 to 7 to override Governor B M Miller's veto of the prohibition repeal convention bill and sent the measure to the House where passage was expected.
The Democratic Business and Professional club of Montana and city Democratic central committee plan a large parade Saturday night in Butte. Starting 8 15 p m at the courthouse, march routes run east on Granite to Wyoming, south to Park, west to Montana, north to Broadway, then east to the Butte hotel for speeches and entertainment.
HELENA March 28 The mercury reached 76 degrees at Billings and 70 at Miles City as unseasonably warm weather persisted in eastern Montana east of the continental divide.
Senator agriculture committee hears Christian Jensen of Putney 8 D advocate foreclosures to relieve farmers. He argues mortgage losses improve farmers’ condition and criticizes price fixing and grain marketing controls while urging relief only via foreclosures.
Fifty three Butte youths, the largest class since February’s anniversary court, passed examinations for rank increases and merit badges at a Silver Bow council board of review at the courthouse. Life Scout Albert Deschenes led with the top award. Tom Barry and Richard Paulson earned Star rank, while Richard Bowman Russell Freeburg Edward Mayer Fay McCall and Eugene Costello achieved first class. Alfred Stockfleth of troop 25 earned apprentice rank in Sea Scout. Second class exams were approved for publication in a later column.
