President Eisenhower warned it is futile to push for deep cuts in his 71.8 billion dollar budget if the United States is to maintain its world position and provide necessary programs. He defended the budget as carefully and intelligently prepared while noting possible savings in places.
Imperial troops with camel cavalry and police closed in on a desert bandit gang blamed for killing two American aid workers and kidnapping a wife. The leader Dadshah, 60, is said to be Iran's public enemy No. 1 with a small following, active near Baluchistan. Kevin M. Carroll and Brewster A. Wilson, both Americans, were killed. Anita Carroll, Carroll’s wife, is missing.
Alben M. Johnson Montana state controller and purchasing agent since 1951 died of a heart ailment in a Bozeman hospital while on state business. He would have turned 73 May 19. Johnson, born May 19, 1884, in St Paul, had served under Governors Bonner and Aronson. He is survived by his widow and five children and was a former Sanders county official and CPA. Gov. Aronson eulogized him as a hard working loyal employee.

Montana Attorney General H. Anderson announced opposition to approving expense claims by 10 Legislative Council members totaling 261.52. He said he will move to deny claims at the Board of Examiners meeting, potentially forcing members to pay their own costs or sue for reimbursement. Two young men who escaped from the Lewis and Clark County Jail at Helena were recaptured about 57 miles southwest of Three Forks in the Jefferson River Basin. Donald Edward Syverson and Robert Eugene Foster, both in their twenties, faced burglary charges and Foster was also charged with assault with a deadly weapon.

White House secretary Hagerty said Ike plans to visit Augusta Georgia for sun exposure next month and will not go to Florida despite reports. He noted Ike gained weight on the trip and the Easter recess timing may push the Augusta trip to around April 18 after Masters finishes April 7.
Police in Muskegon Michigan report a theft during a bowling match. Howard Yreeneman saw the thief hide in the pin pit and run off with his ball after Yreeneman rolled it down the lane.
Railroads reported all stalled trains freed and schedules near normal after storm in western Kansas. Seven deaths recorded as workmen and warmer weather reopened highways and repaired damaged power and communications lines. Mrs Susan Toy a pioneer resident of Butte Montana Territory died in a local hospital Wednesday evening she would have turned 87 July 15. A native of Cornwall England she arrived in 1885 and married Toy the next year. She was among the citys last mining era residents and recalled early Christmas incidents in a past feature. The grand rabbi of Medea and leader of the Algiers Jewish community Jacob Chekroun was shot Wednesday as he left his synagogue. His wounds were described as serious. Authorities reported several suspects have been rounded up.
The Senate approved a 15 month extension of corporation income and excise taxes, delaying a 3 billion dollar annual drop slated for Monday. The House, already passing a one year extension, appears ready to accept the longer term to avoid a revenue shortfall. Efforts to aid small businesses were defeated and extensions proceed toward Eisenhower's signature.
Murray Garsson, 68, brother of Henry Garsson, died in New York after a fall that led to brain hemorrhage amid financial collapse from wartime arms contracts. The Garssons were imprisoned for war contract fraud linked to ex-Representative Andrew May. assets were seized during a Senate probe. Dr. Emanuel M. Josephson aided Garsson during homelessness after a lengthy prison term.
An earthquake described as a local disturbance shook Salt Wells twelve miles east of Fallon Nevada on Wednesday. University of Nevada seismographs recorded the tremor at 5 22 a m with no damage reported.
