February munitions data show aircraft production up 4 percent to 8 760 planes with a record airframe weight of 81 400 000 pounds, including gains in transport and bomber categories. Landing craft and shipbuilding rose 10 percent while overall munitions slipped 1 percent and heavy truck output neared schedule.
Consairway claimed a new speed record for the Honolulu to San Francisco eastward run, eight hours nine minutes. The Liberator bomber converted for transport averaged 269 miles per hour over 2400 miles, beating the previous eight seven record. Flight Captain R M Reid of Dallas led the crew with Co-pilot C G Brown, navigator W M Paul, radio operator H L Aikin, and engineer W F Watson.
Five Montana plants from Anaconda Copper Mining and Montana Power received National Security Award certifications for outstanding security and protection measures. Lt. Col. Charles J. Allen led the ceremony at the American Legion hall with Military and OCD officials present and remarks from Gov. Sam C. Ford and other dignitaries.
Swiss and London reports say the Hungarian puppet government will reimburse Germany for military costs of the occupation army in Hungary. Payments would come from Hungary’s clearing debt and include feeding German troops. A Zurich report notes 11 trainloads of arrested Jews and others moved to concentration camps in Czechoslovakia, with confiscated property given to Germans.
Ten task forces of U S Flying Fortresses Liberators and escorts bombed nine German airdromes and Tours freight yards in France with 750 to 1000 heavy bombers. Some bombers failed to return. German defenses largely stayed on the ground as RAF and US crews struck Essen and Pas-de-Calais targets amid improving weather.
Swedish plane travelers report Berlin still burning on the third day after Friday night raid. A grain elevator near Anhalter station remains alight for a fourth week after a direct hit. Tempelhof Airdrome is barely recognizable and two administration buildings have been demolished with planes using an improvised runway.
Allied bombers attacked Wewak air dromes in northern New Guinea with 178 tons of bombs, causing heavy damage. Offshore two enemy vessels and seven barges were destroyed or heavily damaged, aiding MacArthur’s push against reinforcements. American destroyers shelled Ramburyo island in the Admiralty Islands.
London officials say Cassino defense shows heavy bombers fail to break fortified positions and may prompt a shift to lighter medium and fighter bombers for paving Western Europe invasion. Medium and light bomber plans would aim to crush defenses just ahead of advancing troops.
C F Kelley of the Anaconda Company testified before the Federal Power Commission and Montana Public Service Commission in Butte that electrification saved the Butte mining industry. He said venting water pumping and hoisting limits would have doomed mining without abundant electric power. The hearing examines whether Montana Power should adopt the federal cost accounting method, which could wipe $50 million from its books. Kelley described Montana’s early power ventures and high voltage transmission as a pioneering response to urgent needs.
Washington March 27 A selective service spokesman says a new government committee to review job deferments for men under 26 should eventually handle all deferments for those 37 and under. Colonel Francis V. Keesling notes no plan to add ages 26 27 28 to the group and that local boards may shift older 1-A cases if under 26 preinduction rush overwhelms capacity.
Allied press reports from Ples March 27 indicate the Cassino assault has been suspended after an 11 day effort. Stars and Stripes and Maple Leaf note Allied resolve to press the drive toward Rome and begin systematic bombardment to clear Nazi parachute troops from ruins of the Continental hotel and Hotel des Roses. Ground activity appears quiet as New Zealand troops are referenced.
Snow flurries expected in Butte after noon with little temperature change. Monday highs near 27 and lows around 1 with trace precipitation. The B-17 Hell's Angels, famed as the Flying Fortress with 48 combat missions and no mechanical failures, will land at Butte airport this morning and open for public exhibition starting at 10 o'clock. Arrival was delayed but a wire to W. J. McMahon of the Victory Labor Management committee confirms the event sponsored by Anaconda Copper Mining Co.
Wayne Lonergan admitted in court that he killed his wife Patriggia after a heated argument in their New York apartment on October 24. He described striking her with a candlestick and choking her, recalling the moment she cried out and questioned what he had done.
In Phoenix on March 27 nine Japanese residents of the Poston Arizona relocation center were sentenced to three years in federal prison for failing to report for their selective service physical examinations on March 19 at the camp. Judge Dave W. Ling presided.
The Red army crossed the Dniester into Bucovina within 15 miles of Czernowitz and captured Zastavna, 12 miles from the Czernowitz Lwow line. Kamenets Podolsk fell after surrounding the city, blocking Nazi routes as Soviet forces push southeast into Bessarabia and threaten the Prut crossing toward Romania.
UPI report from Pearl Harbor says Mitchell bombers escorted by Marine Corsair fighters faced intense anti-aircraft fire and Zeros as they hit Ponape for the 19th time. Four to five Zeros were shot down. Ponape runways strafed. Ujelang atoll also hit. Navy planes then attacked four Marshalls atolls with no losses.
Ottawa March 27 Muni cions Minister C D Howe announced subsidies ranging from 15 to 65 cents a ton will be paid starting April 1 to western Canada coal mine operators who have been operating at a loss.
New Delhi March 27 Japanese forces push toward Kohima the key communications center in the Nagas while other invasion columns are checked with heavy losses Mountbatten headquarters said. Kohima northern slopes 58 miles north of Imphal would cut the Manipur road isolating British forces on the Indo Burmese border and threaten the Assam Bengal railway feeding Stilwell’s northern Burma front. A second column near Ukhrul and a third near Tamue Palel road face containment with ongoing fighting.
