The Office of Price Administration says fruit juices will need fewer blue coupons next month while prunes and raisins go free. Dried soups lose half their points, while beans, catsup, chili sauce and tomato products require more points. The changes aim to curb oversupply and prevent waste as apple products rise in value.
Crowds in Butte packed meat markets on Saturday as butchers worked nonstop to meet demand before Sunday rationing begins. An extraordinary rush saw a full tenderloin turning into steaks in hours, with shoppers cheering and workers pausing for a lunch intermission while fans watched the cutting theatrically.
Office of Price Administration issues require prominently displayed point values for meats and canned goods and new pork retail ceiling prices in stores by April 1. The United States and Britain agreed to hold the forthcoming conference on European refugee relief in Bermuda. The announcement was made Saturday by the state department.
The Butte unit of A. W. V. S. will open an information booth at the Northern Pacific and Union Pacific railroad station to aid service men. Washington March 27 A House compromise between the Rum skip a year and the Doughton not one cent of abatement income tax plans seemed likely after a day of inconclusive floor debate. Supporters of both plans claimed enough votes to win while Democratic whip Ramspeck predicted the House would write its own compromise measure.
The 1943 Grand Lodge sessions of the I. O. O. F. in Montana, set for June 16 and 17 in Butte, were canceled after executive officers met in Helena. Grand Master W. D. Kendrick and Grand Secretary W. H. Johns announced the decision following a request by O D T director Joseph B. Eastman to avoid intercity travel. Montana lodges voted to cancel by more than five to one.
London report says Soviet forces have killed 28 000 Germans since February 1 on the Orel front near Nazi base. The bureau cites 20 000 German deaths in February and 8 000 in March with 6 820 Russian losses. Denies German claim of vast Russian troop losses and notes no major front changes.
Dr. Thomas Parran approved federal aid for the Sisters of Charity Central School of Nursing basic program. The Montana Board of Examiners for Nurses relaxed entry rules to help fill a nursing shortage. The War department says a new portable weapon, dubbed bazooka, can defeat tanks pill boxes and light defenses. It is a shoulder fired high explosive weapon designed for teams, with deployment on North Africa and reportedly seen on the Russian front. It emphasizes mobility in jeeps or by two men and will be used by raiding tank hunting and recon units.
Draft boards nationwide will reclassify registrants in non deferrable jobs starting next Thursday. Officials say many have changed jobs to essential work but lack complete figures. Those with valid dependency claims switching to essential work move to 3-B, while others stay 3-A or 1-A with a 30 day stay if they register with the U S employment service.
