Montana cities eased from a brutal cold as temperatures rose from subzero readings to 26 above in Butte and 26 above in Helena after a sharp deep freeze. Trade winds of late winter gave way to sun and forecasts of above freezing by weekend.
Montana reports detail highway contracts totaling 4.66 million dollars awarded by the state highway commission. Eleven plus projects across 13 counties cover 213.642 miles of roadwork and 17 bridges. April 29 sets remain for oiling and resurfacing plans, while federal funds may drive further action.

The Colletts then surrendered and were jailed in Middlesboro as tensions flare among mountaineers amid renewed feud. Walter Parsons faced a planned court hearing for a killing the prior Saturday.

A South Park officer testified he pursued a man believed to be the Lingle slayer after experiencing a vision mental condition.
