The widow Hattie Kortzeborn testified she and her son believed he planned another trip to California and that, the morning of December 21, she found the back door locked and missing clothing and a valise belonging to him.

Walter Morrison testified in Bridgeton that his uncle William Werkhiser knocked his mother Mary Morrison unconscious, then carried her body away and left it in the countryside. He had remained silent for two years, speaking out after Werkhiser was jailed on a larceny charge.
