Butte Gas Station Robbed as Attendant Shot

A gunman shot 23 year old Gale Wood at Valley Conoco in Butte and robbed the cash box and desk drawer. Wood crawled 30 yards to signal for help, was in fair condition, and identified the robber as tall and lanky with black pants and a torn jacket. A screwdriver left behind helped police. Butte and Silver Bow County deputies investigated the robbery while Scout volunteers aided Wood.

House panel backs three Monday holidays plus new Columbus Day

The House Judiciary Committee approved a measure to move Washington's Birthday Memorial Day and Veterans Day to the nearest Monday and create a new national holiday Columbus Day on the second or fourth Monday in October. Effective date would be 1971 and states would need matching laws for full effect.

Phosphate Mine Tragedy Claims Drummond Worker

Roger C. Olson, 31, of Drummond was killed at the Douglas Mine seven miles east of Hall when a ore chute collapsed. He and two coworkers were present when the accident occurred about 9 am. Workers spent roughly five hours recovering Olson's body before transport to the next destination.

Contract Awarded for Bozeman Post Office Repair

The Haggerty Messmer Co. of Bozeman won a 37470 dollar contract to repair the Bozeman Federal and Post Office Building. The award was issued Tuesday by the General Services Administration per Montana's Democratic congressional delegation.

Capt. Shirley W. Hancock, 47, of Butte, was appointed to take over April 1 as acting chief of the Montana Highway Patrol. He has led the Butte division since 1961 and will succeed Col. Alex B. Stephenson, who seeks election as state treasurer.

Montana counties gain extra welfare aid in strike relief

Montana's Board of Public Welfare approved $172,500 in additional state funds to Silver Bow and Deer Lodge counties to operate their poor funds through April 15 amid ongoing mining strikes.
