Senator Wherry of Nebraska introduced a bill to return atomic energy control to the Army. The proposal would abolish the civilian atomic energy commission and place overall authority with the secretary of the Army. The President would order the shift 30 days after passage.
Secretary Royall told the Senate armed services committees he opposes reorganizing agencies that work well with the atomic energy commission and military representatives. Secretary Forrestal said Russia cannot yet produce atomic bombs and that the United States has the knowledge and capacity, with the possession of the atom bomb, to deter aggression even if it does not instantly win a war.
Judge J. J. Lynch signed a decree in district court Thursday granting Bollla Butler a divorce from Cecil Butler and custody of their son. Mary L. O’Leary filed for separate maintenance against John J. O’Leary on grounds of extreme cruelty. They wed in Butte on Sept 30, 1939. David James Currie sought probate of Anna M. Currie’s will. estate valued under 30,600 dollars. Pho C Hanson, R. M. Hobbs and IG. V. Brew filed an inventory valuing William Hiram Woodruff estate at 16,391 dollars. Judge Lynch appointed Otto J. Nagel, Marie Stefanie and Wilma Frey appraisers for Everett W. Matteson estate. The Three Forks Portland Cement company filed for dissolution.
Rep. Gossett testified before a Senate subcommittee that the New York Communist party could steer a presidential election under current rules. He supported a constitutional amendment to abolish the electoral college and distribute states’ votes proportionally. He warned big cities and minorities can drive outcomes in pivotal states like New York. A separate note mentions 103 year old Jane Ralston joining a social club in Dorchester, England.
Floral Park community activities include a Dramatic Club party in the Floral Park church recreation hall with dancing games and Easter table decor. Other events feature Junior WSCS at Grace Silver Row church planning men’s club dinner April 13, National Federation of Post Office Clerks auxiliary meeting at the YMCA, and Good Friday services at St Ann church with Easter masses. Lookout Pass near the Montana Idaho border received 25 feet of snow last winter. Northern Pacific plow crews reported on Thursday that crews have been plowing between Wallace and Haugan almost daily this week and found 96 inches of snow remaining on the pass.
Shelby voters will decide April 3 on a $18,509 levy and a $25,000 bond issue to fund operating schools. The district already has $75,000 available for a new grade school and could finish it with $25,000 more.
United States authorities suspend plans for Army day full dress celebration on April 6 due to mounting Italian Yugoslav tension over Trieste future.
Mrs Mary Mellen Jones 58 died suddenly Thursday morning at her Stone area ranch home. Born July 8 1890 she was daughter of D J Mellen pioneer Stone and Flint Creek valley residents. Survived by daughter in law and son Norbert Mannix Avon and son Francis Jones Avon four grandchildren, siblings and in laws. Body at Wilson funeral home. Funeral Monday at 10 15 from Wilson to St. church.
The Rev. Lionel LeGris will celebrate a requiem high mass at 10:30 o clock at Philip Church. Parishioners are invited to attend the service honoring the departed.
Livingston hosts the 38th Hereford show where R.S. Princeps, the grand champion bull, sold for $1625 to James McMasters of East Helena. Reserve champion Carlos Axtell 3rd went to Grande brothers of Lennep for $1100. Top females brought $300 each, led by Miss Advance 8th, with Rosalind 47th as reserve. The top 20 bulls averaged $800. The note about the horseshoe crab adds an odd science aside.
In Sacramento a special meeting of the Democratic delegation to the national convention reaffirmed loyalty to President Truman and denounced Henry Wallace's third party. State Central Committee Chairman James Roosevelt convened the gathering by wire, citing a serious political situation in California.
