Two armed convicts holding 19 hostages surrendered after securing a deal with state officials. Rivera and Farra will be moved to Davidson County jail unharmed to await court action on writs of habeas corpus. Hostages walked to safety as relatives watched.
Butte students Margaret Mohan and Paul Miller led the grand prize winners at the Butte Regional Science Fair held in the Civic Center. Mohan won first grand prize for geology with Crystal Study. Miller won boys' first grand prize for Radiological Study of Protozoa.
Jean Sorenson, 53, stepped down from the witness stand in district court after about six hours of testimony across two days. Her trial concerns the first murder charge in the June 8 fatal shooting, with defense attorneys J D Freebourn and W B Freebourn present as the Thursday afternoon session ended.

Alfred Cunningham, 39, driving in the 500 block on East Mercury around 5 30 PM, stopped when a ball rolled into the street. He then moved forward and struck Danny Gonzalez, 6, son of Mr and Mrs Jess Gonzalez, as he found the boy between the car’s wheels. Danny was taken to St James Hospital with a broken leg and other injuries. Cunningham assisted by taking the boy and his mother to the hospital.
