Uncertain note hovers over conference talks to avert a threatened auto workers strike. General Johnson remains optimistic and says the conference will continue Sunday morning, signaling potential compromise efforts.
Washington reports protracted talks among union leaders, automobile manufacturers, and Recovery Administrator Hugh S. Johnson fail to yield a deal. A threatened general strike hangs over the industry as Johnson keeps optimism, saying talks will continue tomorrow morning.
A man calling himself Harry A. Yoder, 27, was arrested in the White House area after slipping past exterior guards and reaching the second floor where he met Mrs. Roosevelt. He was taken to a hospital for observation as President Roosevelt attended a dinner nearby.
Frank C. Walker of Butte and New York will deliver the Montana School of Mines commencement address on June 7. He is described as President Roosevelt's right hand man and currently heads Comerford Amusement and Publix, after serving as national treasurer of the Democratic Party.
Helena March 24 A district judge quashed a demurrer in the Stafford Bruce Cooney occupancy dispute for Montana commissioner of agriculture signaling a possible merits hearing. The ruling opens a likely protracted court contest over the office amid appointments by Governor Cooney after Stafford’s reappointment.
British officials see slim hope for breaking the European arms stalemate. France demands security guarantees for a limited German rearmament while keeping Paris levels. London prefers bilateral talks and doubts a Geneva conference with American participation will move the issue. Rumors say Washington may seek feelers on American views of security guarantees.
Police investigated possible cosmetic surgery linked to John Dillinger after a torn receipt from a health center was found in an apartment he allegedly occupied. Authorities questioned physicians, reviewed records, and revised photos to show how surgery might have altered his chin scar and mole.
Kalispell will have no mayoral contest on April 2 as Dr. B F Vosburgh’s petition was disqualified for lateness and non certification. Mayor J P Bruckhauser remains unopposed as Kalispell has not held a city primary in 20 years.
Washington dispatch reports Continental Bank of Alto Texas asked recovery administration for a new Blue Eagle after a holdup in which bandits shot the emblem. One robber was killed and the other two captured. a third assailant was shot dead during the heist.
Treasury investigators report large scale use of dummy names by silver speculators on the New York market. Government agents found listed holders often act for the real owner and many dealer addresses and names are fictitious.
In Butte the five day drive by the Butte Auxiliary for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children surpassed its $7500 target, raising $8454.89. A. E. Wilkinson and Mrs. J. C. Ryan led about 150 workers with 200 firms forming 100 per cent clubs and 3500 citizens joining. The campaign featured Junior Service League and school groups boosting Tag day sales and fund participation.
In Puente del Inca Argentina on March 24 indications arose that the San Jose airliner wreck, found at the foot of a high Andean peak after 20 months, was robbed by men who had not revealed the discovery. A witness from an unofficial expedition reported rifled cabin billfolds, fueling mystery over a passenger rumored to carry a gold belt smuggled from Chile.

A Butte man identified as P. J. Kennedy a war veteran from Fergus county Montana died by self inflicted gunshot near the city dump. A note found in his pocket said dump my carcass in potters field. Kennedy had written to a Denton friend last Tuesday expressing intent to take his life.
A head on collision on the Butte Dillon highway killed Sheriff William C. Orr of Beaverhead county and Pat Walsh of Minneapolis. O W Miller survived in grave condition with a fractured hip and punctured lung. Orr’s funeral is set for Monday at 3 from the Masonic Temple in Dillon with Knights Templar and Masons conducting services.
Republican Representative McClugin accused a hidden advisory group in the government of betraying the president and called for Dr. William A. Wirt of Gary Indiana to identify the brain trust. Democrat Bulwinkle said he would seek a resolution to compel Wirt to name names next week.

Public Works Administration figures show 1.382 billion dollars in PWA funds slated for 1934 with projected monthly expenditures of 164 million by June. Harold L. Ickes cautioned no advance promises and noted the data excludes statutory and executive allotments. The study highlights power plant spending totaling 128.86 million with 104.16 million from the federal government and 34.7 million allotted to 50 non federal projects.
Major General George O. Squier, former chief of the army air service, died at George Washington Hospital in Washington. Born in Dryden, Michigan, he was 69 years old last Tuesday.
Montana mining operators met at the Finlen hotel to form the Mining Association of Montana, a permanent body to coordinate with existing groups and push for more aid from the New Deal. Carl J. Trauerman was elected president, Harry C. Bacorn vice president, and F. C. Gilbert secretary treasurer. An association board with two directors from each mining county will be formed.
In district court yesterday morning the suit by Frank Reardon against School District No. 1 and the board of trustees was dismissed by Judge Frank L. Riley with consent of counsel. Officials say the action removes obstacles to borrowing 800000 from the Federal Public Works administration and allows trustees to liquidate bonds after the April 7 school election selecting one of two sites for the building.
