Britain seeks to block German domination of Europe while saying it will not cripple Germany’s export trade. Prime Minister Chamberlain cites past fates of powers ruling the world and Russia agrees to anti-Hitler declaration while Poland resists joining.
Adolf Hitler formally took Memel from Lithuania into greater Germany after a swift Baltic port visit. He pledged to master Germany’s fate and hinted that expansion might end, though a later official text contradicted the remark. Hungary expanded at Slovakia’s border, prompting protests as territory shifts spurred Western questions.
Bozeman March 23 More than 6200 farm families helped by the Farm Security Administration are making progress toward economic recovery. Despite 1938 price declines, they increased their average net worth by over 15 percent in the past year. They also met obligations to the federal government.

Pan American Airways postponed the Yankee clipper trans Atlantic survey flight to Saturday afternoon. The 42 ton aircraft carries 21 men including Army Navy and Coast Guard officials. The start was moved from tomorrow to allow additional test flights.
The House tackles a farm benefit appropriation bill proposing 750 million dollars for agricultural recovery. President Roosevelt called for a 30 percent cut, but the appropriations committee ignored the request, including a 250 million parity item.
Addis A. McGrath county clerk and recorder said he would issue new election certificates to all county officials affected by the Montana Supreme Court ruling this week. The decision held that offices covered by the constitutional amendment had been elected to four-year terms beginning November 8, 1938.
In St Louis a proposed statue for the soldiers’ memorial will not include a baby. The model of a woman holding a infant was rejected by the board of public service citing cost and that “it’s not our baby.” Sculptor Walker Hancock argued for the symbol of sacrifice.
Butte and Silver Bow county health officers James O’Brien and David Sullivan issued a final warning to residents to stop dumping garbage in vacant lots. They warned drastic measures would follow to ban dumping except in designated areas. Commissioner Dan Sullivan announced an annual county cleanup drive with workers sent to districts to haul away refuse washed into areas by high water.
Rising Milk River flood waters forced evacuations across northern Montana as ice jams were dynamited to keep waters moving. Malta saw a 17 foot rise, Glasgow braced for higher levels, and a flash flood inundated Big Muddy creek valley. CCC camp at Malta half submerged. Dodson and Wagner farm families evacuated.
Mariner Eccles, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, urged Congress to move quickly to balance the budget. He warned cuts would require reducing relief, CCC camps, public works, veterans' pay, farm subsidies, and national defense, and asked Congress to take responsibility for any reductions.
Montana state welfare board announced grants in aid totaling 92740 to 23 counties for March direct relief. Musselshell county received an April grant. Silver Bow led with 22500 and Cascade with 18000 among others.
