Verne Warren Harshman US navy aviator survived six days at sea after a fuelless glide and life raft ordeal near Buenaventura Colombia. He was picked up by the steamer Cerigo and brought ashore as navy rescue efforts had apparently failed. Sharks tailed him briefly but he endured until rescue.
Butte backs its Auxiliary for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children with eager workers and quick public response on opening day of the 1931 drive. General Chairman A. E. Wilkinson and Mrs. T. J. Walker report many clubs enrolled and about one tenth of the $10 000 goal subscribed.
Archie McTaggart won the Democratic nomination for mayor of Butte with John F. Cullerton second and Kerr Beadle 16 votes behind. McTaggart led the final Democratic mayoral vote 1,952 to 1,651 for Beadle and 1,667 for Cullerton in the primary.
The Montana Power Company offices served as headquarters for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children auxiliary campaign. Chicago March 23 Twelve jurors were sworn in to decide if Leo Brothers fired the shot that killed Chicago Tribune police reporter Alfred Lingle last June. The state announced it would not prove who ordered the assassination or why Lingle was killed.
Melbourne reports the airliner Southern Cloud carrying seven people missing after last sighting at 3 30 p m Saturday near Wagaratta 145 miles north of Melbourne. Extensive land and air searches continue with hope of locating the craft and its occupants.

In Wyoming, Mrs. Clarence Linn of near Cooke City Montana died en route to a hospital shortly after her child was born in an automobile stalled in a snowdrift twenty miles north of Cody. Her husband was with her and could not summon help. the child’s fate was not learned.
Convict testifies before a legislative committee investigating Joliet prisons that he paid $2,000 for parole to a former board member. He cited continued prison troubles and claimed pardons and parole boards have腐 rotten to the core since 1918, naming names as the inquiry proceeds.
White Bay ice floes released sealing vessels carrying 127 Viking disaster survivors who head to St Johns in clear weather. Most are aboard the steamer Prospero after transfer from Sagona. sick and injured remain on Sagona. An inquiry by Prime Minister Sir Richard Squires will probe the wreck when all are ashore.
The ninth annual Butte Automobile Show ended with a capacity crowd of over 3 000 last night. Over four days more than 10 000 visitors attended, with final events held in the Columbia Gardens pavilion. The Butte Lions Club led the program on the closing night as organizers praised the event’s record display and turnout.
A Malvern volunteer fire company engine flipped on King road two miles west of Malvern killing five firefighters and injuring nine as darkness fell. The rapid-response crew faced a deadly crash, with the engine leaving the road and overturning. Local officials investigated the crash and mourned the loss.

Henry Muntzer, 83, longtime Butte resident and former Alsace-Lorraine refugee, was critically ill at his home 833 West Quartz Street. He arrived in Butte in 1882 after fleeing Paris during the Franco-Prussian siege and later operated a local brewery.
Wheat prices on the Chicago market fell sharply to near 1895 lows, dropping 3 to 11 cents a bushel on 1931 crop options. The decline followed the Farm Board’s announcement that it would not stabilize prices beyond May as the 1930 crop moves out of dealing.

Nelson C Bowles testified about his wife Leon Bowles death from a knife wound last November 12 in the apartment linked to his illicit romance with Miss Irma Loucks. Bowles claimed she killed herself after a visit to the secretary's apartment. Miss Loucks is co accused in the murder.
