Montana DEQ and NRDP release a Strategic Plan to reshape Clark Fork River remediation focusing on high risk areas and habitat restoration. It proposes a narrower removal buffer, combined budgets to boost restoration, and mandatory public meetings twice yearly to keep residents informed on progress and monitoring results.
Montana fish wildlife officials detected the New Zealand mudsnail in Silver Bow Creek near Warm Springs Ponds, eight miles northeast of Anaconda, marking the first in the upper Clark Fork area. The discovery followed a zebra mussel fouled craft interception at Anaconda’s station. The agency notes snails spread via gear and can rapidly expand populations, challenging eradication.
Prosecutors say a third young boy alleges a hockey coach Jami Leslie James raped him at a Butte hotel in January 2021. New charging documents in state court detail police statements, James denial, and prior complaints tied to his hockey camps and race. He faces two counts of sexual intercourse without consent in Butte and four counts of child rapes in Flathead County.
Republicans blocked Democrats changes during six hours of debate before an initial 68 to 32 House vote on HB 2, the main two year budget package totaling 14.3 billion dollars with state and federal funds. Rep. Llew Jones said the Appropriations version is about 32 million less than Gianforte’s starting proposal, citing 4.6 percent year over year spending rise as conservative given inflation. House Majority Leader Sue Vinton praised the process saying HB 2 was produced conservatively and appropriately.
