Record road letting yields over 52 million in Montana contracts

Montana State Highway Commission awards a record 52.0 million dollars in road contracts. Beaverhead County projects include grading and surfacing on the Idaho-Silver Bow line and 4 833 rods of fencing. Contractors include Nilson Smith, Huckaba, Hildreth, Baltrush, and Walling with bids ranging over 29 thousand to 1 743 thousand dollars.

Nutter Speaks To 200 In Anaconda Promise Of Industrial Growth

Gov. Donald G. Nutter addressed more than 200 southwestern Montanans in Anaconda praising growth through higher taxes avoidance and urging surplus funds to be used for state services. He highlighted potential steel mill in Anaconda missile program near Great Falls and electronics manufacturing as key prospects. The event hosted by Anaconda Chamber of Commerce also featured Webb and Knapp VP noting steel plant progress.

Great Falls Publisher Alex Warden Named to NATO Commission

Montana senator Mike Mansfield and Senator Lee Metcalf praised the appointment of Alexander Warden of Great Falls to a new NATO promotion commission. Warden, 61, publisher of the Great Falls Tribune, is among 10 appointees named by Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson. He is on vacation in the Far East and may not learn of the appointment immediately.

Total Vote Change in City Canvass Sees Lowered Turnout

Unofficial primary victors were certified in a special canvassing session with no candidate vote changes. The total vote cast was corrected to 6,739 from 7,093, reducing the turnout percentage from 51 to 48.5. City Clerk Beryl Wilson cited a double-counted precinct and an undercounted one as the error source. Mayor Vern Griffith presided. nominees include Joseph F. O’Neill for city treasurer and Thomas F. Powers, Frank Panisko, Tom Sheehy among others.

Train Crash Kills Two Men at Galen Crossing

Two retirees from Anaconda, Andrew Strommen 78 and Frank Landreville 60, died when the Northern Pacific North Coast Limited struck their car at the Galen crossing near the state sanitarium in Deer Lodge Valley. The westbound train traveled 75 mph. brakes were applied before impact. wreckage stretched over 1,000 feet. An inquest will be held. witnesses said the men did not see the approaching train.

Food Stamp Plan Tailored For Silver Bow County

US Department of Agriculture officials said Silver Bow County's food coupon program will be tailored to local needs with a June start. A reclassification of public assistance recipients is planned before launch, with individual coupon decisions by local welfare authorities and applications reviewed case by case. Candidates Discuss Merits of Two-Party System in School Elections

Nearly 300 Butte residents attended a candidates panel at Webster-Garfield School Auditorium chaired by Dr. S. L. Groff and moderated by the League of Women Voters. Four school trustees hopefuls spoke on issues while City School Supt. George Haney outlined current needs and future plans. A confrontation over unread questions punctuated the meeting before audience participation subsided.

Butte Teen Sets Record With Triplet Birth at St James

Linda Little, 16, and Walter Little, 19, welcomed triplets at St James Community Hospital in Butte. A girl and two boys weighed 3 pounds 13 ounces, 3 pounds 14 ounces, and 3 pounds 8 ounces respectively, all in incubators. The birth marks the hospital’s first triplets in 10 years. The couple, living at 1605 Florence, face housing needs but report the babies and mother thriving. Parents expect no names yet for boys, had planned a girl name Lynn. The doctor admitted twins were suspected but not confirmed.

Five Star General Rank Restored to Eisenhower

President Kennedy signed legislation restoring former President Dwight D. Eisenhower to the five star general rank. The measure maintains his annual $25,000 pension and $50,000 expense fund as a former president. Eisenhower had resigned his Army commission after being nominated for the presidency in 1952.

Boy Kidnapped in Belleville Found Dead in Woods

Ten year old Tom McNevin was found dead eight miles northwest of Belleville after a ransom demand. Police say scoutmaster Warren Williamson, 35, a Belleville paper towel firm partner, killed himself Tuesday night. The father Donald McNevin heads a local creamery and once served as alderman. Coroner says death by exposure with rope marks and head injury from a hockey stick.

Electrical Group To Convene In Butte This Fall

The Montana Chapter of the National Electrical Contractors Assn announces the Montana Electrical Convention in Butte on Friday and Saturday with sessions at the Butte Country Club.
