Britain demands Egypt stop sniping over Suez talks

Foreign Secretary Eden warned Cairo that talks on the Suez Canal Zone must resume only if Egypt halts ambushes and attacks on British troops. Four British soldiers were killed and several wounded as tensions rose after Egypt rejected the warnings. The dispute prompted a Cabinet meeting called by Prime Minister Churchill to discuss security concerns.

School Election Interest High Among Taxpayers

Taxpayer interest in the Silver Bow District school election on April 3 is rising, with 17 492 registered voters in the district—above last year’s special election and well over earlier years. Voters will decide on two levy ballots for elementary maintenance and an adult education program, plus four site options for a new junior high and three trustee spots contested by Independent and New Party candidates.

Anaconda NLRB Balloting Begins

Anaconda Copper Mining Company workers in Anaconda began a National Labor Relations Board election to choose a union. About 700 of 2,628 voters cast ballots by noon at 10 polling places, with balloting continuing through Tuesday.

Eugene P. Sullivan 47 of Butte dies at St. James Hospital after a car rear ending a lumber truck on the Butte Anaconda highway. Mrs. Sullivan 41 improves. he leaves a wife, sister, aunts and other relatives. He worked for Safeway and belonged to the Butte Elks.

Butte High Coach Bill Hawke resigns basketball post

William Hawke Butte High School history teacher submits resignation as basketball coach while remaining in school as a teacher. Board of School Trustees accepts the move with regret and opens the coaching position for applications to April 15. Hawke, a 1930 Butte High graduate, has coached since 1951 and led teams to state tournaments. He served in the Air Force in World War II and is noted for scouting and lineman development. He lives in Ramsay with his wife and four sons.

Gets His First Deer

Weldon North Carolina motel manager J J Thompson who has hunted deer 30 years killed his first buck a 150 pound animal Sunday night in the lobby of his motel near Weldon. The buck leaped through the glass front door into a lobby crowded with guests and was felled after Thompson fired twice with a .22 rifle.
