The Office of Price Administration banned retail sales of butter margarine lard and other edible fats and oils for one week from March 22 to March 29 to conserve stocks before rationing. Restaurants are unaffected. wholesalers supply them. The move targets 600,000 stores nationwide and aims to prevent a rush before meat fats rationing begins March 29.
Scoutmasters issued entry blanks for the Scoutwaree to be held at the School of Mines gymnasium at 7 30 Friday. Herbert West announces entries must be returned to the Scout office by Tuesday. Leaders reviewed the program to standardize rules and speed it up. Officials for the Scoutwaree will be announced next week.
Allied forces hit Japanese shipping from the Kai islands to New Britain in multiple raids. A consolidated Catalina crippled a large destroyer with two direct bomb hits in the Solomon sea north of New Guinea. Dutch New Guinea and Cape Van Den Bosch saw additional attacks on cargo vessels and a convoy, with one sinking vessel left offshore.
The Axis submarine campaign seems active as eight more cargo ships were sunk in the western Atlantic, raising Allied and neutral losses to 634 since Pearl Harbor. Twenty-four seamen died, 87 were missing, and over 200 were rescued from the eight vessels, including five U S ships and three foreign tonnage. The Honduran merchant ship loss in the Caribbean marks the first announced casualty there since January 22.
Bernard Bretherton, a prominent Butte tenor, will be featured at a Red Cross benefit concert sponsored by the Butte Navy Mothers' club. Butte voters head to polls this afternoon and evening to cast ballots in a municipal primary with 42 candidates for 19 offices. Polls open 12 noon and close 7 pm, with party nominees to be chosen for mayor treasurer police judge and eight aldermanic seats.
