President Roosevelt pressed a plan to avert a strike in the auto industry as labor unrest spreads. He convened a long meeting with manufacturers and sought to coordinate a settlement with both sides and a new licensing option floated by William Green of the AFL.
A total of 11,324.07 dollars in delinquent taxes on 99 parcels in Silver Bow County has been paid to date by the Home Owners' Location, per tax clerk William Malloy to the county commissioners yesterday.
Lilyan Tashman a motion picture star and wife of Edmund Lowe died at Doctors' hospital after an operation. The New York born actress began in the Ziegfeld Follies and met Lowe during her Follies years. She had struggled with illness for over a year while filming her last picture.
The Butte grade schools annual track meet sponsored by the Butte Exchange club will be held April 27 and 28 at Clark Park. John Lindquist presided over the sports committee meeting announcing the event and plans for arrangements. The event is expected to draw several hundred young athletes.
Helena March 21 Montana farmers plan 5,534,000 acres for nine principal crops in 1934 an increase of 1.2 percent from 1933 with flax seed and oats showing notable gains Spring wheat at 2,856,000 acres barley 266,000 beans 42,000 and tame hay 1,594,000 acres also listed were corn 226,900 acres and potatoes 24,000 acres.
A massive night fire in Harodate, Northern Japan, left 80,000 residents in ruins. More than 1,000 people were killed and about 120,000 homeless fled to the hills as damage topped 10 million yen.
Canvass results show Joe Duffy prevailing in the initial vote tally. The Barry murder trial jury, after seven hours of deliberation, retires without a verdict and resumes today. The defense argued self defense while the state contends Dick Barry fired in a fusillade at Frank Murphy at the Pony Chili parlor on East Park Street.
The city council affirmed Joe Duffy as the First Ward aldermanic nominee by a one vote margin after official canvass changed his tally by two and James Mountain by one. Monday night’s tally had Duffy and Mountain tied at 192 each.
County relief chairmen and administrators, field supervisors and case investigators will gather in Helena March 28 and 29 to receive detailed instructions on the new relief program starting April 1. Assistant state director E. E. MacGilvra announced the meeting, with many expected to attend the state planning conference March 26.

Dr James E West of New York city head of the Boy Scouts of America delivered the keynote at the Finlen hotel banquet in Butte. About 250 attendees from many towns listened as West urged intense commitment to training boys for citizenship. Also present were Kiwanis Lions Exchange and Rotary members and local leaders. West arrived for a two day regional conference joined by Arthur A Schuck of Chicago.
The Butte Auxiliary drive for Crippled Children reports $1,945 in receipts with three days remaining to reach $7,500. A. F. E. Wilkinson and Sheriff Larry Weir urge full canvassing as 72 firms joined the 100 Per Cent club, boosting district support for Silver Bow county's crippled children.

Al Smith will resign tomorrow as editor of the New Outlook magazine. He cites pressure from other business activities and will tell publisher Frank A. Tichenor he must sever his editorial ties. Smith became editor in August 1932 and previously attacked Roosevelt policy with the phrase baloney dollars.
Three unmasked men in a blue coupe with an Indiana tag robbed the Citizens State Bank in St. Cloud Florida seizing about $10,000. They warned victims they were members of the Dillinger gang and disappeared into swampy central Florida areas.
The Montana state water conservation board will apply to the PWA for a 5 million dollar loan and grant to fund irrigation and water storage projects. The plan aims to employ 2000 Montanans this summer and about 500 next winter, with the first year's construction costing 5 million dollars. The application seeks approval of a general project made of multiple units, each a separate project for which specific applications will follow, with many units ready within 30 days.
The Chicago murder tale reports the 34 year old Fred Goetz known as The Brain of the Burke gang found shot in a Cicero gutter. He led extortion, bank robbery and killings tied to Capone liquor syndicate and played a role in the 1929 St Valentine’s Day massacre. He was described as an honor student and athlete at the University of Illinois.
Helena Montana March 21 ex relief director T C Spaulding will explain the new work relief program starting April 1 at the Montana planning conference March 26-28. He says the plan replaces original relief and CWA activities and aims to reestablish families on a self supporting basis through community projects with economic and social value. The conference will include county chairmen and supervisors and discussions by Montana leaders on welfare fields such as family welfare medical dental nursing child welfare recreation veterans welfare and rehabilitation tuberculosis Red Cross and welfare administration guidelines.
