The United States seeks information on reports of Jewish persecution in Germany. An ambassador in Berlin requested detailed formation on alleged atrocities by Hitlerite forces. A protest to the government may follow based on these inquiries.
A Jewish delegation led by Rabbi Stephen Wise urged action after reports of indignities against Jews in Germany. The State Department cabled Ambassador Sackett to verify the complaints and consider a formal protest to Berlin if facts are confirmed.
Missoula officials report two surveys in the region outline possible work under President Roosevelt’s reforestation push. They estimate a $17,000,000 appropriation could employ about 25,000 men across projects including road and trail building. One plan favors hand labor only, the other uses maximum labor and equipment for efficiency.
In a White House pronouncement the administration states it will not seek congressional deferral of June war debt payments totaling over 144 million dollars. It signals talks with debtor nations led by Britain, which owes 75.95 million due June 15, with no anticipated deferment.

Washington March 21. The beer bill is groomed for statute books and nearly ready for delivery to the White House but blocked by a technicality until tomorrow. Without Vice President Garner's signature the act cannot pass, delaying beer flow until April 7.
Helena dispatch reports nearly all officers and enlisted men will be dropped from the Montana National Guard due to economy orders from Washington. Overseas veterans and pensioned service members are to be removed, disrupting summer encampment plans and widening a 40 percent legislative cut that already limits operations. Eight of 25 companies may be eliminated to meet the downsizing.
The board of county commissioners reported 375 applications to open retail beer vending in the county. State Board of Equalization will issue formal blanks Thursday. applicants who filed petitions must call to obtain and complete the new forms before any action.
Montana faces unsettled conditions Wednesday and Thursday with colder air east of the divide on Wednesday and warmer conditions east of the divide on Thursday.
In Corvallis Mrs Amy L Frogge received a chicken shower arranged by daughters, sisters and nieces. Guests brought hens, and a brother delivered a rooster named Franklin D. The hostess discovered 13 eggs laid in the nests during the afternoon.
The Butte Lions club will participate in a tree planting at Maiden Rock rear ing ponds on April 30. The event, sponsored by the Butte Anglers' club, marks the creation of a park at the hatchery site with trees donated and volunteer labor. A Merchants Festival is planned for June 5 to 10 during the Lions district convention, with the American Legion district meeting also scheduled. Two new members Frank Anderson and John Sampson joined. Don Anson led the ceremonies with Ray Leverich assisting. Talks by A A Dwight Pat R Gagner Harold O Leary and John Claxton covered club activities. Gagner noted the Lions Scouts strength at 16 and each member adopted a troop boy.
Helena March 21. Montana was comparatively free of communicable diseases last week. Thirty-one measles cases and 30 chickenpox cases headed the list, with other illnesses fewer in number according to a report from the state board of health offices.
Frances Perkins launches a sweeping reorganization of the Labor Department detailing swift action against alien racketeering. She dismissed 55 immigration investigators and furloughed 16 more as only 12,970 remained of the 200,000 fund on March 15 to cover salaries and expenses.
Paris March 21 Premier Edouard Daladier accepted no Mussolini peace plan yet he pledged France to some form of cooperative effort with Britain and other western powers to oppose the danger of war. The decision follows talks with Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald and British foreign secretary Sir John Simon on a two week peace mission.
Brighton Colorado March 21 Louis A Johnson national commander of the American Legion escaped serious injury when his automobile overturned on a paved highway near here late today.
New York dispatch reports Peter the Great a 34 year old hippo at the Bronx zoo is ill with mumps. He ate two bales of hay and two bushels of spuds, his reduced diet, as doctors used a garden hose to administer medicine.
Los Angeles reports Carnegie Institute seismologist H. O. Wood warned a jury that another major earthquake is likely in southern California. He said the heaviest shock of a two decade sequence is yet to come and referenced past quakes in 1906 1925 and the 1915 onward series.
In Helena a robber attempting a filling station heist was about 50 percent effective after interruptions by a repairman and an internal revenue deputy. Joe Rogers and attendant Clarence McGowan were bound in a wash room until George Burley arrived to call police. The thief fled with about $60 of an estimated $120.
Butte police patrol highways last night to capture a bandit who robbed a Helena gas station attendant of $6. The suspect, armed with a sawed off shotgun, was believed headed toward Butte in a small car.
In Trenton Georgia on March 21 Grady Jeffrey a 14 year old was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the stabbing of Prof W C Collier the school principal. He received an 18 year penitentiary term. Jeffrey contended self defense claiming he was knocked to the floor during the incident at the school February 17.
City Clerk Dineen announced an official canvass of the March 20 primary will be held tonight after consultation with the mayor and city attorney. Total votes: 9,864 for three mayoral candidates and 9,910 overall with McTaggart leading 5,324 to 3,549. Blewett polled 1,091 as Republican. Treasurers: Holland 2,842 Shea 2,266 McCarthy 2,012.
