Treasury officials faced grim prospects as income tax receipts fell again. Thursday’s takings were 44 million versus 70 million a year earlier, fueling fears the end of the fiscal year deficit could exceed 500 million dollars. Senator Watson signaled no tax increase is needed amid improving business sentiment.
The Viking survivors remain aboard the rescue steamer Sagona off Horse Island while the government ship Prospero fights to reach them. A volunteer party ventured over seven miles of ice with blankets and stimulants to aid 12 survivors, six of whom are too injured to walk. Henry J. Sargent, the sole American rescued, sits up on the Sagona and is considered out of danger as radio traffic accumulates.
A heavy fuel load and a rising tide hindered Balchen during a mission outline in St. Johns Newfoundland. The report continues on page 2.
In New Delhi Mahatma Gandhi says he will attend the second round-table conference in London next autumn if he helps settle Hindu Muslim tensions. The miniature round-table at the vice regal palace included Lord Irwin the viceroy, Gandhi, five princes, and all but two ministers of state.
Rome reports the sea today yielded the body of Lieut. Giuseppe Damonte, companion of Umberto Maddalena and Capt. Fausto Secconi, noted Italian aviators who plunged to their deaths Thursday during a flight.
A Montana forecast expects Sunday to be fair in the east with possible showers in the west. Monday looks fair with little temperature change.
The 60 foot granite obelisk for Theodore Roosevelt on Continental Divide Montana was chosen by the National Fine Arts Commission. Rep Leavitt says the monument, near Glacier National Park, will sit between Lewis and Clark and Flathead forests with a curb and mound setting. Bids to be issued in April. Hoover may attend dedication this summer. Corrine Roosevelt Alsop laid a cornerstone last summer.
The Montana association, formed in Helena, grows as manager Guy G. Emery tours the state. He plans talks with Colonel Miller of Chicago to place a Montana exhibit at the 1933 Century of Progress Fair. Governor Erickson directs the effort to the association.
Butte voters will name candidates in a city primary Monday between noon and 7 pm. Across eight wards 16 precincts nominate mayor to alderman for the April 6 general election. W. G. Maloney says 35 candidates filed, including six Democrats for mayor and one Republican with two tentatives. John Sullivan seeks the treasurer post. M Kerr Beadle, current mayor, tops the Democratic mayoral slate.
Lieutenant Commander Emory Winship, 59, U S N retired, shot himself in his downtown San Francisco apartment amid estrangement with his second wife. A valet reported discovering him, and police noted he managed large estates including a $1 500 000 California property once held by his former wife Katherine Dillon Winship.
Nine states the district of Columbia and Hawaii join the Red Cross honor roll for meeting drought relief quotas in the $10 million drive. Arkansas and Montana are highlighted among contributors with cash and cargo donations. totals reach $10,111,590 with 630 carloads of foodstuffs reported.
Montana’s largest annual bowling event begins with 660 men entered as 132 teams compete over nine days in Butte. Dr. J. S. McKinley welcomes participants, honors organizers, and notes record entries and local support for the 1930 classic.
In Arizona on March 21 800 sailors aboard the warship Arizona cheered President Hoover as he prepared for a port call at Porto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The crew posed for photos after an inspection, the band played Anchors Aweigh, and the captain led cheers for the commander in chief before an early start to the voyage.
A damp but warm night drew a colorful audience to Columbia Gardens for the 1931 automobile show. Exhibits covered motor vehicles, accessories, aircraft, and festive decorations under bright pavilion lights. Kiwanis, led by Jack Noonan, ran the event with Ashworth’s band and singers Jimmie Chatham and Louise Ferkovich providing entertainment. A larger audience than opening night attended.
In Joliet Illinois March 21 Protestant and Catholic chaplains accuse the state parole board of fostering inmate unrest. The inquiry includes southern Illinois Chester and Pontica facilities after Father Eligius Weir testimony reveals young prisoners with hardened criminals and inmates far from reform institutions. The committee sends summons to the parole board chair and two members.

In San Francisco on March 21 the state supreme court ruled unanimously that a wooden leg is personal property but its owner may claim damages if it breaks during employment. John Driscoll, a teamster, lost his leg from a wagon fall. $383 in damages and $19.45 weekly were awarded while he recovered and awaited a new leg.
March 21 Anaconda fire total wrecked the O K store a pioneer business in Anaconda with stock and building damaged by an early morning blaze. Firemen battled dense smoke and a rekindled flame as 12 firefighters aided by Emery Kell fought to contain the blaze in the basement and building area.
On page 20 today the chapter details the second phase of the Meuse Argonne offensive. It covers Pershing and American troops facing terrific hand to hand fighting during resumed attacks on October 4. The First Division breaks German lines while the French Fourth Army halts and seeks aid. Casualties are heavy and flu strains add to the toll as the Second Army forms.
Two US Navy aviators died when their utility amphibian crashed into the Panama Canal waters during a heavy rainstorm between Balboa and Cristobal. Pilot Paul Avril Wilson of Billings Montana and passenger George W. Van Wegan of Minneapolis Minnesota were recovered by the destroyer Ellis. A board of investigation convened to determine the accident's cause.
Two hundred passengers including 20 mothers and children were brought to Greenock after the liner Montclare ran aground on a reef in the Firth of Clyde. The crew remained aboard and officials hoped the vessel might be floated tomorrow despite severe bow damage.
Akron Ohio March 21 Paul F Kassay charged under Ohio syndicalism law with advocating sabotage of the dirigible Akron. A writ of habeas corpus will be heard Monday after a bond set at 20000 dollars and a prior hearing delay.
Governor J E Erickson will be guest of honor at the first annual AHEPA banquet at the Silver Bow Club on March 28. The event is under Butte chapter No 206 and will include W E Harmon state secretary and George P Porter state auditor among notable guests from Helena Great Falls Missoula and Salt Lake City officials. The committee includes Theodore Caldas and Peter Sargen and invited state officers during a Helena visit.
