Butte marks the arrival of spring with an early morning snowstorm despite mild winter and forecasts of a sunny day. Residents awoke to fresh snow and chilly winds as the season appeared unsettled.
Webb and Knapp Inc executive Robert E. S. Thompson will visit Butte on plans for a $30 to $40 million steel mill in Anaconda. Senator Mansfield cited Zeckendorf saying construction would begin this year, with Gulf States Land and Industries optimistic after talks with Helena planning officials.
United States Defense officials consider the Montana School of Mines at Butte for a military research college. Sen. Mike Mansfield says the institution could host a basic research program in materials science. Deputy Secretary of Defense Roswell Gilpatrick pledges careful review if a Butte proposal aligns with Northwestern University work. Mansfield notes the plan could lift a depressed local economy.
Incumbent Great Falls Mayor William H. Swanberg swept the Democratic primary defeating three challengers. He will face Republican J. George Graham, who ran unopposed, in the general election on April 3. Swanberg beat his nearest foe, former mayor John Steffani, by over 2000 votes as turnout hovered around 35 to 40 percent of 21,546 eligible residents.
Recommendation by city schools superintendent George Haney to hire 282 principals and teachers for the 1961 62 year was unanimously adopted by School Dist No 1 trustees with six voting members present. Of the 282, 277 are current system members. five on leave may return in fall. Ten married teachers were not recommended for reemployment under Master Agreement Rule Three.
MISSOULA AP Incumbent Walter Cash is renominated in a tight GOP primary for Missoula mayoral race. Unofficial tallies show Cash beating S John Schile by 41 votes as Earl Hiett and Anthony Keasi lose in the Democratic primary.
An Army officer and an enlisted man parachuted from a light plane over Hawaii. Lt. Norman Gustius of Sco bey Montana and Spec. 4 Gary Heggan bailed out at 1500 feet after engine failure. They were in the sea about two hours before rescue by Army and Marine helicopters.
Moody Brickett, a Great Falls lawyer and former Montana assistant attorney general, was appointed by Federal Judge W D Murray to fill the unexpired term of Krest Cyr as U S attorney for Montana. Brickett, 42, took the oath and will start in Butte Tuesday morning to recommend four deputies and awaits the President's decision on further appointments.
August W Vidro won the Democratic mayoral nomination in Anaconda defeating former Mayor Earl R Sullivan 1671 to 574 as 43 percent of 6220 eligible voters cast ballots. Incumbent Carl Anderson planned to run as independent. In police judge race George Murray beat Thomas McCarvel 1307 to 1057. Treas Gertrude McMahon was unopposed for the Democratic nomination with 1794 votes. Ward results and alderman races followed with multiple incumbents and party affiliations listed.
Walkerville holds its first postwar election with Mayor James R. Shea and City Treasurer Annie Hill renominated as expected. A Democratic write-in surge produced 61 votes for undeclared candidates, plus 112 write-ins for a non-existent police magistrate.
President Kennedy asked Congress to boost Agriculture Department by 442 million, Interior by 41 million, and USIA by 11 million as amendments to Eisenhower’s 1962 budget. A reshuffled State Department budget reduced by 130 thousand, with African programs and policy planning increases. A pilot food stamp plan aims to shift production to nutritious foods for lower income groups.
Hollywood AP reports the first born son of the late Clark Gable, born Monday and weighing eight pounds, resembles his father with different ears. Kay Gable calls him handsome. This infant is Gable’s only child from five marriages. Gable died November 16.
In Helena AP J D Holmes reports the food stamp plan tests to boost low income purchasing power. Silver Bow County Montana is selected alongside eight states including Pennsylvania Michigan New Mexico Illinois Minnesota West Virginia and Kentucky. Howard P Davis calls Silver Bow County a showcase for the West.
Frank Gorsh chairman and Silver Bow County Commissioners will join retail merchants and bank representatives for a meeting with federal officials at Montana Power Auditorium at 11 a.m. to discuss the food stamp pilot program.
Four longtime Butte aldermen Edward Hastings Alex McDonald Dan Kinsella and Frank Moran were defeated in the city council races. Joseph F. ONeill won the Democratic nomination for city treasurer while Mayor Vern Griffith and Police Judge John Seton faced no opposition. Turnout reached 7 093 of 13 899 registered voters in a tight municipal primary.
Joseph F. O'Neill, an employee in the county clerk and recorder's office, won the Democratic primary for Butte city treasurer on Monday with 2,437 votes. Dan J. Shea received 1,974, Helen Prendergast 1,215, and Terry Keating 857. No Republican nominee exists for the April 3 general election.
The Standard Post reports possible four cent gasoline price cut in Butte. Distributors deny knowledge or warn rumors exist. If enacted, operators may absorb one cent while companies cover three cents. Current prices range around 38.8 cents, with variations from 35.5 to 42-plus cents per gallon.
Auto strippers wrecked one auto and partially destroyed another in cases reported to police and sheriff s office Monday. An auto stolen Sunday by Mrs. Ann Stratton was found abandoned in south Butte. Thieves removed seven tires six wheels and the back seat and damaged the body, windows and headlights. Deputies found another unidentified auto near the southwest outskirts of Butte with plates removed and parts stolen.
AP and Tass report two officials from a state farm near Moscow received one year in prison for permitting 2,182 pigs to die last winter. They were found guilty of failing to provide adequate winter housing and feed for the herd.
Montana east sees partly cloudy skies with fair Tuesday night and Wednesday and cooler conditions. Highs reach 45 to 55 Tuesday with lows 15 to 30. Wednesday slightly warmer. Montana west remains partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday with fair Tuesday night and minimal temperature change. highs 40 to 50 Tuesday, 50 to 55 Wednesday with lows 15 to 25 Tuesday night.
