Carrier attack cripples Japanese fleet in Inland Sea strike
U S carrier task forces under Vice Admiral Mitscher hit the Japanese fleet in the Inland Sea of Japan damaging 15 to 17 warships and up to seven freighters. More than 475 enemy aircraft were destroyed or damaged as two days of attacks stretched from Kyushu to Kobe. No American ships were lost though one was heavily damaged and returned to port. The strike could leave Japan without a carrier ready for action and targeted Kobe, Kure, and other bases.

Pfc. Darrel Peterson 21 of Dell died in action on Luzon February 8. He enlisted February 9, 1943 from Oregon City and had been overseas six months. Born January 11, 1924 in Lund Idaho, he lived most of his life in Beaverhead County. Survived by four brothers and three sisters in Idaho, Oregon and Montana.
