The trial of 21 year old Steve Fournier for attempted extortion resumes in criminal court with co defendant James Hannifin. Prosecutors allege letters to T H Oaas demanded 1000 under threat to his three children. Witnesses testified Fournier admitted writing the letters but later denied naming Hannifin. A messenger identified Fournier delivering a letter and returning a fake currency package. The pursuit ended after a city wide automobile chase. Hannifin to face trial after Fournier. The case is the first attempted extortion tried in Silver Bow county and may run two more days with a jury verdict expected late Tuesday.

Helena resident Warner A. Hawkins a 51 year old Helena merchant died today from a heart ailment. He leaves a widow and two children a son Clarence of Helena and a daughter Elvira a dietician at the men’s dormitory on the university campus at Missoula.
A series of explosions at the million dollar Springfield high school building tonight injured ten people including six firemen a reporter and two students. Firemen led by Assistant Chief Harry Gorham battled a small basement fire as blasts tore through the structure, tossing victims into the yard. Thornton Walker State Journal reporter and bystander James Brown aided the responders as the building was evacuated and the blaze extinguished. Authorities believe bombs caused the explosions which caused far more damage than the fire itself.
Three youths alleged to have thrown a rock through the window of Uncles Jewelry at 113% West Park and stolen four watches are in custody of county officials. They were arrested after police traced them fleeing the scene between midnight and 1 am Saturday. Frank Birmingham reported his car stolen from his Walnut street home and garage break in. A Telin Blaine reported multiple thefts from his car including coats, hats and gloves.
