After a 12 hour session, Montana lawmakers approved an orphan bill raising personal income taxes by about 18 percent to fund a 25 million revenue package. The measure passed the Senate 29 26 largely along party lines, while House passage followed heated debate and party divisions with a 70 25 tally.
Rockets slammed into Da Nang killing 11 civilians and wounding 24 as U S and South Vietnamese forces fought back with artillery. In Saigon area 10 122mm rockets hit Da Nang and military police recovered bodies from debris. Northwest of Saigon, 10 000 U S troops launched Operation Atlas Wedge to block the North Vietnamese 7th Division near the Saigon River corridor.
The Butte public school district plans to recruit 67 new teachers to handle about 850 Catholic school transfers in the fall. Superintendent Charles C. Davis says 33 positions cover transfers, with postings for French and German instructors along with a Russian language and history teacher. The district aims to consolidate facilities, moving seventh and eighth graders to St Ann and Immaculate Conception sites and creating a combined Catholic Central High School.

General Motors recalls 1.1 million cars and chassis for brake seal wear that caused hydraulic pressure loss. The Alabama Huntsville bus crash on Nov 19, 1968, left one student dead and 24 injured. Mrs. Joseph Newlin wept on her husband’s shoulder during the posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony for Marine Pfc. Melvin Newlin who died heroically in Vietnam. President Nixon presented the medal to the Newlins of Wellsville Ohio.
Miles City faced rising floodwaters as frozen ice from the Yellowstone River backed into an old river bed near the city. Police said ice east of town pushed water into the Tongue River bed threatening the north island area, with water rising from 2-3 inches to knee deep in an hour.
British paratroopers aboard the frigates Rothesay and Minerva sailed from St Johns with 315 Red Devil troops in a show of force. Demonstrators in Antigua protested using Antiguan soil and harbor for a possible assault on Anguilla, a British dependency.
