Montana adjourns longest session in 46 years with balanced budget
The Montana Legislature ended a 76 day 3 hour 22 minute special session in Helena with a balanced biennial budget of 124 million dollars. Senate President Pro Tem Edward Dussault and House Speaker James Felt led adjournments, as Groff became interim Senate leader. Forty first special session began March 3 and ended with Ex HB1 signed by lawmakers.

Flight instructor and student die in Montana crash
A single engine Piper Cherokee crashed about 12 miles west of Billings killing flight instructor James Byrne 26 of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania and student Gary Sava 22 of Lethbridge Alberta. The Herrod Aviation Co. plane took off at 8 15 am for a one hour student flight.

Deer Lodge Man Dies After March 2 Crash
Max Moore 70 dies at Powell County Memorial Hospital from injuries in a March 2 car pickup crash near Galen. His wife Elizabeth Moore also died. The pickup driver Hazencroy Pratt 41 is jailed in Deer Lodge for manslaughter. Stephen J. Fiske 5 is treated for minor injuries. Moore was a Deer Lodge rancher and former Milwaukee Road electrician.

Butte Pilot Hurt After Jet Ditching In Mediterranean
Navy Lt Joseph Duffy of Butte was minorly injured when an F4 Phantom ditched during maneuvers from the carrier America in the Mediterranean. He was rescued by helicopter and treated in a naval hospital. another pilot, Lt George Dunham Jones of Meridian Mississippi, was killed.

Butte Vet Receives Bronze Star 22 Years Late
Ray N. Varela, 48, a former Butte miner now running a Mexican food store, was notified by air mail that he earned the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground action against the enemy in the Pacific. He was wounded on Okinawa on June 13, 1945, and spent three months in Saipan naval hospital after the injury.
