A Soviet cosmonaut performed history's first free space swim during a Voskhod mission. He and his crewmate remained in orbit, reappearing over Soviet territory on their 13th orbit as Moscow radio reported the event.
UPI reports US officials acknowledge the Soviet Union's Voskhod 2 spacewalk as a major milestone. They concede Moscow leads in manned flight while planning future US Gemini and Apollo milestones. Leonov's spacewalk is televised worldwide as Tass notes future lunar aims.

The right to vote bill cleared its first Senate hurdle 67 to 13 as supporters push to end literacy tests and enable federal registration in six southern states Alaska North Carolina counties and Apache County Arizona. Senator Eastland of Mississippi opposed a written deadline for committee action. The measure draws support from Senate leaders Mansfield and Dirksen and faces continued debate.
Gov George Wallace said he would request President Johnson to federalize civil authorities or officers to protect the 40 mile Selma to Montgomery march, claiming 6 171 officers would be needed but saying he lacks enough troopers to guard the event. President Johnson announced federalizing the Alabama National Guard if Wallace refuses or cannot protect order, to back the voting rights march.
President Johnson named Henry H. Fowler a Virginia attorney to be secretary of the treasury. Fowler, 56, a former undersecretary, would replace Douglas Dillon who plans to leave March 31. Fowler's nomination surprised some after reports pointed to David Kennedy as likely appointee. Fowler, born in Roanoke, educated at Yale Law School, served as undersecretary in 1961 and helped steer tax reforms and income tax cuts.
The Montana Supreme Court refused to intervene in Butte aldermen at large elections, saying it had no jurisdiction over federal court actions. The court criticized the federal district court for not deferring to state courts on a state question and noted the malapportioned status of Butte’s boundaries.
Anton John Knievel 88 a Butte civic leader and business man died at his home 900 W Silver Born April 15 1876 in West Point Nebraska. He arrived in Butte in 1895 and co founded a fruit and produce venture later forming the Butte Potato and Produce Co which built a five story warehouse at Iron and Utah. He helped form Pacific Gamble Robinson Co and served on its board from 1929 until retiring 1964. He led the Butte YMCA and served as its director and was active in the Chamber of Commerce and Salvation Army. He was a member of St Patrick Catholic Church.

The grocery store at 1103 Missouri owned by Mrs. Mitchell was robbed early Thursday night of $15 in cash. She told police the robber wore a long overcoat and carried a sawed off shotgun. Police have a description of the suspect and his car.
Cloudy with light snow flurries today and continued cold. Highs reach 18 mostly along the Divide while lows fall to -12. East of Divide parts see Friday snow flurries in the mountains and partly cloudy nights into Saturday with little temperature change. West of Divide sees similar trends with highs 10 to 20 and lows near zero to 15 below.
