Butte announces a $35 million push on projects as the city opens its spring market festival with a grand parade led by the B and M band and a pursuit by an airplane. Merchants stock up with deep price cuts to lure shoppers while optimistic crowds gather tonight for the festival's start.
A statewide survey by the Butte Chamber of Commerce shows Montana construction projects in 1931 will total over 35 million dollars. More than 6 million will be spent in 10 cities with the rest supporting statewide enterprises. Willard Thompson says the data aim to reveal employment prospects and genuine bonafide proposals.
A powerful bomb shattered the eighth floor of the Butler building in St. Louis. Police attribute the blast to enemies of Beverly Brown and Gulie Owen, race track information operators and bondsmen for Cu koo gang members. No injuries. Damage estimated at 50,000 as the explosion damaged offices on lower floors.
Albany March 18. The city affairs committee asked Governor Roosevelt to remove Mayor Walker of New York for incompetence and corruption. The letter, signed by Dr John Haynes Holmes and Rabbi Steven Wise, accuses the mayor of procrastination, betrayal of public duty, and obstructing inquiries into magistrates court.
In Nice on March 18 Magistrate Vachier ruled that Mrs. Charlotte Nash Nixon Nirdlinger must stand trial for the killing of her husband Fred Nirdlinger. He indicated the charge would not be first degree murder.
A Lynn Mass hotel fire at the Lenox hotel claimed three lives and injured eight others. The blaze caused an estimated 165000 dollars in damage with several residents narrowly escaping injury or death.
Amid icy barriers 121 Viking disaster survivors and five native families are confined on La Barbe Island with bread and tea running low. A relief air mission departs from Roosevelt Field toward Boston to coordinate aid and a Seaplane will fly to Horse Island under Bernt Balchen’s command.
