A 3:05 p.m. fire at St. Mary Church on Main Street was set deliberately, damaging altar cloths and the gospel stand. Fire Chief McCarthy said the flames were started in four places and the blaze was contained before serious damage occurred. Two visiting girls, Pamela Donnelly and Dannette Mossison, alerted a passerby, who called the fire department.
A massive avalanche swept a Macedonian mountain slope near Skopje on Saturday, burying a farmhouse and killing 10 of 11 residents. A boy survived, rescued by authorities and miners.

John A. Costello prime minister of Ireland sent St Patrick Day greetings to Butte in a telegram received by Federal Judge W D Murray. Murray is vice president of the Friendly Sons of St Patrick and toasted the group at a Finlen Hotel banquet. The telegram expressed pleasure in sending greetings to all members of the Society.
