Kennedy marches amid mixed reception in New York

Senator Kennedy drew a mixed reception on Fifth Avenue as anti Kennedy sentiment mixed with cheers during his St Patrick's Day march. Police blocked crowds while Kennedy greeted supporters including Mrs Kennedy and John Jr before being whisked away. In Washington a separate report notes a big break in the copper strike as United Steelworkers approve a settlement with Phelps Dodge ending one front of the eight month labor dispute though other unions must accept before the walkout ends.

Butte marks St Patrick Day parade with 300 in Gaels march

The third annual March of the Gaels through uptown Butte drew about 300 participants led by Butte High School band and majorettes. Sheriff Ken Cunningham and Police Chief Jim Clark officiated as escorts while Mayor Powers and City Council President Robert Schulte led in the procession. Reverend Edmund Taylor rode in the honor car as the parade celebrated St Patrick Day with Irish and non Irish marchers alike.

St Patrick Day celebrated by Butte Irish and friends

In Butte the Friendly Sons of St Patrick marked sixty eight years since their first banquet with a Saturday night gathering at the Finlen Hotel. About 300 guests including many visitors joined in the Irish celebration with decor of Cead Mille Failte and a program featuring Dr Thomas A Clinch of Carroll College and Butte native Thomas P McGree summarizing American Irish in Montana history.

A Montana crash one mile south of Big Timber killed 18 year old Big Tinz McLEOD and injured David Peters, both residents of Big Timber. Authorities reported the collision occurred on a county road in the early hours of the morning.
