Police and FBI agents watched as about 1,200 protesters marched on the Capitol after a permit dispute. Mounted officers charged scattering demonstrators, injuring a Japanese demonstrator and pushing others from sidewalks and yards. Several injuries were reported as the crowd faced blunt force and firm containment.
The Friendly Sons of St Patrick hold their annual banquet at the Finlen in Butte with a 7 pm start and a 6:30 pm cocktail hour. Cale Crowley of Billings will speak. guests include colleens and Irish-descended guests from Helena Anaconda Billings Missoula Great Falls Dillon and other communities.
The Arctic cold snap hit Montana with a glancing blow as ground blizzards and heavy snow warnings were issued for North Dakota South Dakota and parts of Montana. Up to six inches fell near Glendive with two to four inches around Wolf Point while Montana highways remained open though visibility was poor on windswept roads.

Air raids and ground troops cleared the Xom Truong area on the Vaio Oriental River in Long An Province leaving it a smoldering ruin. Seven Viet Cong bodies were recovered. US helicopters and Skyraiders conducted bombing and strafing while 1,400 South Korean troops landed for transport and construction work. A 600-man advance force had already formed at Di An, north of Saigon.
Police say they have solved the Brooklyn subway slaying of 17 year old Andrew Mormile after a tip led to a mural witness and a nationwide alert for Christopher Lynch 17. Terry Toomer 17 is named as Lynch's companion and material witness.
James J. Spurlock, 20, of Opportuity, was found guilty of third degree assault and sentenced to six months in the county jail after a nonjury trial. State witnesses said Musgrove was beaten during a dispute after a near collision on Continental Drive.
Southern Democrats criticized President Johnson’s proposed voting rights legislation as bipartisan sponsors worked to shape a draft for Congress. They argued the measure risks excess federal power over local elections and questioned its impact on registration and voting in southern counties with low turnout.
Governor Tim Babcock reluctantly signed HB448 raising Montana income taxes. the measure adds about 1.54 million dollars in each of the next two years with one quarter of receipts slated for public schools. Tax rates rise across brackets from 1 percent to 1.1 percent on the first thousand, up to 7.9 percent on incomes over seven thousand, sparking mixed reactions and a final tally of taxpayer impact.
Diplomatic dispatches report Iraqi demonstrators smashed windows and set fires at the West German Embassy in Baghdad in protest of West Germany recognizing Israel. About 10,000 Iraqis marched on the embassy, with clashes also reported in Beirut and Tripoli though police kept the embassy area secure. Three embassy cars were destroyed and a building section burned before police intervened.
Partly cloudy and cold with a high near 14 and low of -10. Temperatures fall further Wednesday with highs 5 to 20 and lows from 5 above to 15 below zero. Areas east and west of Divide show cloudy spells with scattered snow and continued cold into Thursday.
