UPI reports a massive search by nine radar ships and forty planes covering 150000 square miles between Guam and the Philippines for 107 aboard a chartered airliner that vanished without a trace with no wreckage or liferafts sighted to date.
Mrs. Phyllis Pardonnet of Lima Montana confirms her husband Specialist 4-C William Pardonnet 22 was listed among 93 aboard a Flying Tiger Constellation missing after leaving Guam en route to South Vietnam. The craft carried three Vietnamese soldiers and 11 crew including four women. Investigations into possible sabotage were noted though no evidence existed yet.
Seattle Sheriff Tim McCullough urged Butte travelers to book lodging through EXPO to avoid inflated rates. He noted Seattle resentments toward hotel gouging and described EXPO as a nonprofit group helping attendees obtain fair accommodations. McCullough, a former Butte athlete, highlighted his Seattle work with youth.
In the Butte Civic Center hundreds attend the District Regional Science Fair featuring nearly 200 exhibits from Anaconda Anaconda Central Boys Central Butte Public Deer Lodge Dillon Girls Central Lima Philipsburg Sheridan Twin Bridges and Whitehall high schools. Projects range from Mice and Mazes to The Anatomy of a Chipmunk with titles like Solar Energy at Work and Chromatography of Dipples Oi in Elk and Deer. Judging occurred Friday night with awards to be announced Saturday at 8 30 p.m.
Nearly 300 guests attend the annual Friendly Sons banquet at the Finlen Hotel with Rev. Charles McCarthy Tim McCullough and Rt Rev M M English among speakers. Robert O Leary serves as toast master as judges officers and many committee members organize the event with music and Irish dancers planned.
Mrs Nelson Rockefeller filed for divorce in Reno citing mental cruelty and the couple’s 31 year marriage ended in about 20 minutes. The former socialite left the Washoe County Courthouse and headed to San Francisco while Governor Nelson Rockefeller declined comment.
Premier Khrushchev boasted of a new Soviet satellite and intercontinental missiles that could attack the United States from any direction. He dismissed the DEW radar system as wasteful and urged Western acceptance of disarmament proposals at Geneva while campaigning in Moscow. The Tass agency said the satellite was unmanned and part of a tests program for 1962 space launches.
Guatemala City's government declares a state of emergency as the army takes civilian powers to halt anti government rioting amid 14 dead and numerous injuries. President Ydigoras Fuentes orders the seizure, citing Castro communist subversion and pledges to act with severity to restore peace. Bank workers and social security staff return to work while other sectors strike.
In Geneva, Soviet negotiator Semyon Tsarapkin charged the United States and Britain seek to disrupt Geneva nuclear test ban talks to pave way for U S atmospheric tests in the Pacific next month. He asserted existing controls are unnecessary and boasted Soviet testing remains traceable by the U S.
UPI report states Pfc. George John Gessner, 25, a missile program worker at Ft Bliss, is charged under the Atomic Energy Act with passing restricted information on Nike Hercules Corporal and Honest John missiles to Soviet agents in Mexico City between December 1960 and January 1961. He is in custody at Ft Leavenworth, awaiting grand jury action after a prior desertion sentence.
Mrs Warder I Alma Higgins 87 of Butte died Friday at 207 W Broadway from a heart attack. Coroner said firefighters failed to resuscitate her. A national figure in Christmas tree history she helped plant the first national Christmas tree at the White House in 1924 and promoted living trees. She pioneered forest conservation from 1904 and helped found the Rocky Mountain Garden Club in 1921. She authored gardening articles and helped create Garden Week ideas fostering conservation and Nativity tree symbolism. Born July 15 1874 in Deer Lodge she was the last survivor of the Nicholas J Bielenberg family.
The forecast shows high cloudiness shifting to partly cloudy conditions through Sunday. East of Divide expect no temperature change with highs 35 to 50 and lows 7 to 30, while west of Divide highs range 35 to 45 with lows 0 to 25 in higher valleys. table notes maximums for two hours and minimums policy.
In Great Falls Montana the four year old William Billy Cook son of Sgt Gerald Cook Malmstrom Air Force Base died after being struck by a car driven by Airman Morris Shaw 32. The incident occurred Friday afternoon as Shaw made a right turn. Police said the boy was hit about 12 feet from the curb. The death raised Montana 1962 highway toll to 32, ending an eight day stretch without a roadway fatality.
In Sidney Montana incumbent State Senator C R Thiessen filed for the Democratic nomination to succeed himself. Mrs Maxine Nutter widow of Gov Donald G Nutter filed for the Republican nomination for the same Montana Senate seat. Thiessen defeated Nutter by 10 votes in 1958.
Lima area rancher Wayne Montgomery filed Friday for the Republican nomination to represent Montana's First Congressional District. He announced at the Missoula County Republican Central Committee meeting and submitted his filing to Secretary of State Frank Murray. Montgomery urged limited government locally with national action only for security or nationwide scope and shared the burden of costs. He was born in Los Angeles and came to Montana in 1951 to manage a cattle ranch.
