Digging of 150 underground silos for the Minute Man missile complex began quietly at Malmstrom Air Force Base Montana. A later staged groundbreaking ceremony involved 15 officials and public representatives and an audience of about 1 000 shouting Fire in the Hole to symbolize the blast.
Dillon schools report a record 917 elementary students due to the East Bench irrigation project. Of these, 94 are children from Bureau of Reclamation families, with 74 new pupils since January 1. An application for federal funds to cover increased student costs has been made.
YAHATA Japan AP hope faded for 26 men trapped in a coal mine after a fire 3000 feet below ground. Twenty four rescuers entered without gas masks to save two trapped by flames and all are now presumed dead. The pit had been praised for safety and lies nine miles from another mine where 71 died last week.
The Friendly Sons of St. Patrick banquet in the Finlen Hotel drew over 225 attendees and featured two fine addresses by Rev. Joseph Mackin and Thomas C. Sheehy. Toastmaster Dan ONeill Jr presided as music and laughter highlighted the St Patrick feast.
Butte resident Herbert J. Evenskaas, 63 Main Service Station operator, was elected exalted ruler of Butte Lodge of Elks. He has 26 years in the lodge and two daughters. Installation set for April 6 with officers James Hope Ted Sivalon Chester McQuinn Frank Loos Joseph McCarthy Thomas Rogers and Dan Piazzola named trustee.

Curtis Kroll, four, spent two hours inside a zero degree chest freezer at the Alexander Miller home in Opportunity. A self locking lid trapped him until neighbors and 50 volunteers helped search before he was found conscious and taken to St. Ann Hospital for exposure treatment.
The Senate passed the emergency unemployment benefits bill after defeating a Byrd state funding amendment. The measure, worth 927 million dollars, uses a common fund financed by a four tenths of 1 percent tax to pay benefits to up to three million jobless workers who exhaust regular benefits, with the bill returning to the House for minor changes.

Helena AP Albert H. Angstman 73 announced retirement from Montana Supreme Court pensioning the longest on record. He fixed retirement at midnight April 9 to allow Chief Justice Harrison to assign cases. Gov. Nuther will face first major judicial appointment. Angstman joined the court at age 40, over 32 years ago, with two brief absences.
Montana forecast shows east region fair Friday with increasing clouds and scattered mountain snow Friday night. Saturday brings few showers at lower elevations and cooler temps with highs 50 to 60 and lows 20 to 35. West region expects variable to mostly cloudy Friday with scattered mountain snow and few showers at lower elevations Friday night and Saturday. Highs 40 to 50 and lows 25 to 35.
A 22 foot python escaped its cage at a roadside exhibit in Gibsonton Florida and fatally crushed 59 year old Alfred Henley, the snake handler. The giant reptile was later found in a tree. Henley died en route to a Tampa hospital. Circus owner Pete Cristiani and two others restrained the snake and brought it down.
