A 16 year old, owner John S. Stephan, of Red Wreckers, plunges nearly 400 feet down Harding Way canyon while attempting to pull a trailer from a precipice. He jumped from the Kenworth wrecker as it toppled. Bystanders urged him to leap to safety as the rig and trailer tumbled and crashed.
A Billings man who claimed to rescue a distressed girl in Butte is jailed on a first degree assault charge after a man identified as Melvin Geis ser is stabbed in the chest and hospital bound. Geis ser, 29, a bartender at the COD Bar, underwent surgery for a chest wound near the lung. Kathy O Neil or Rose Fonenot, 21, of 104 North Montana, was detained for questioning and released after denying any knife involvement. John W Tilson Jr., 21, of Billings, is held in the county jail pending further proceedings. Gesser told authorities Tilson stabbed Geis ser in a dispute at O Neil's apartment. O Neil disputes the knife claim.
Montana east sees partly cloudy skies with a few snow flurries in the mountains. Winds 25 to 35 mph southwest in the west portion. Thursday and Friday highs 35 to 50, lows 20 to 35. West Montana expects cloudy skies with scattered rain or snow mainly in the mountains and limited temperature changes.
A Montana official reported receiving quick courteous service after a fire at the Butte fire station. Firemen found a small hole burned in the rear seat of a car driven by Secretary of State Frank Murray.
Two Anaconda residents Joe Clark and Dee Schnoor faced a preliminary hearing before U S Commissioner Dave Holland on charges of possessing distilled spirits without federal tax stamps. The judge delayed a decision to bind over for district court amid defense objections about seizure procedures and missing witnesses.
Rep. Lee Metcalf filed for the Democratic nomination to the U.S. Senate in Montana. He faces Sen. James E. Murray and candidates LeRoy Anderson and John Mahan as discussions of possible entry by former Gov. Bonner circulate. Metcalf cited polling and willingness to give up House duties as factors in his decision.
In Starved Rock State Park near Ottawa three Chicago executives wives are found beaten to death during a winter outing. Sheriff Eastley calls it murder with possible rape. authorities suspect multiple assailants as a snowbound search recovers the partly clothed victims, all mothers, after a Monday hike and a lodge stop.
James R. Shea 45 year old Walkerville mayor announced Wednesday he will file in April on the Democratic ticket for nomination to Montana's First District. A longtime community leader and former box champion, Shea said Montana needs clear objectives and pledged to represent all Western Montanans fairly.
Butte and Silver Bow County planners presented a master plan to the Kiwanis club outlining a traffic system to ease congestion. They propose concentrating high speed traffic on select streets, reducing use of minor roads, with final plan review by the City Council and Board of County Commissioners after public hearings.
Members of the Butte Automobile Dealers Assn announced that the local dealers will operate on Standard Time this summer. Jack Davis said the 10 members voted unanimously to align with the Merchants Committee of the Chamber to maintain Standard Time hours during the summer months.
The Friendly Sons of St Patrick held their annual banquet at the Finlen Hotel Silver Bow Ballroom with Irish and many other nationalities present. Out of town guests from Great Falls Deer Lodge Helena Missoula Anaconda Whitehall Boulder and Phil appeared as speakers and celebrants.
Three men suffered leg injuries when a new Le Tourneau 60 ton electric dump truck left a pit road at the Berkeley Pit Wednesday afternoon. Edward Shea, Thomas McGinnis, and Kenzie Letchworth were taken to St James Hospital. Letchworth was teaching the others to operate the vehicle. The truck veered off the road into boulders. the cab snapped off but the vehicle did not overturn or fall down the bank.
