The Anaconda Copper Mining Company Employees club opened with gala open house drawing about 15 600 attendees. Thousands toured the remodeled Thornton hotel building housing three floors of clubrooms and recreation facilities. Oscar Hills received the keys from D M Kelly as the event kicked off a festive, neighborly era in the mining city.

Youth Confesses Hanging Mate Murder Charge
Albany March 16 Carl De Flumer a 14 year old schoolboy was charged with first degree murder after confessing to the impulse slaying of eight year old Robert Wahrman. The body was found in a Loudonville woods with a clothes line looped around the neck. The boy stood silent as Judge Robert J Laffin read the charge and both parents wept. District Attorney Julian B Elway said the slaying appeared impulsive and refused to elaborate on motive.

Crossing Crash Fatal to Nine
Nine youths aged 18 to 25 were killed when their car struck a backing railroad switch locomotive one mile west of West Frankfort Illinois. The car was dragged 50 feet after collision with the tender. Engineer C R Guthrie of Herrin said the auto was traveling very fast and that the occupants seemed unable to stop. The locomotive was engaged in nearby switching at a normal backing speed. All victims resided in the area.

Car Overturns Injury Four Involved Near Divide Montana
Four Missoula residents were injured when a car hit a soft highway spot two miles north of Divide and overturned several times Sunday night. Victims included Mrs K Woodward with a fractured femur and shock, her husband K W Woodward with multiple cuts and contusions, Mrs Walter Bakke with bruises and cuts, and Paul Castoldia with chest injuries. The car owned by the Woodwards and driven by Castoldia was taken to St James hospital in Butte for treatment. Officers Virgil Farrar and deputies Maurice Barry and Robert Russell investigated.

Storm Threatens to Swamp Fort Dearborn Rescue Efforts Hampered
A northwest Pacific storm endangers the stern section of the wrecked tanker Fort Dearborn and halts immediate rescue of 22 men aboard. Sea and air search continue for 12 crew members who escaped in a lifeboat after the ship broke in a Wednesday storm about 1100 miles northwest of Honolulu. Fifty mile per hour winds and 18 foot waves hinder salvage as the U S S El Dorado directs operations and reports failed attempts to remove the crew. Four Injured in Kansas City Explosion
Four members of a sleeping Kansas City family were injured in an early Sunday blast that blew parts of their home 200 feet into the air and ignited the ruins. Mrs. Ray Harkness 35 and her husband 37 were taken in critical and fair condition respectively, with son Gordon 15 and sister Miss Ann Whitney 42 burned but alive. Nearby residents were shaken as the force ripped through walls and roof while a neighbor reported a deafening rumble and blinding flash. The fire chief called escape miraculous.
