Insurgent planes attacked Barcelona with waves of bombs for over three hours. At least 14 people were killed and 20 injured as central district buildings burned and smoke filled the sky. Nearby towns were also struck.
Loyalist forces, bolstered by artillery and munitions from a nearby state, slowed the insurgent advance toward the Mediterranean along the Aragon front. French and British talks showed readiness to review non intervention if Germany intervenes. France mobilized arms to the Franco border while pledging support for Czechoslovakia against Germany.
The report describes Hitler entering Austria without opposition after threats to invade to stop Schuschnigg and suppress an Austrian Nazi movement. Vienna’s regime used dictatorial power and a rigged plebiscite to try to secure authority to crush Nazi rebels as Hitler moved to decisive action.

Bozeman March 16 William Joe Alexander of Butte a sophomore in chemical engineering at Montana State College received the Alpha Chi Sigma award for an outstanding freshman record in chemistry.
The council ordered the county to pay for sewer connections dating back five years, refusing further line hookups without proper arrangements. A special committee was set to negotiate terms with the city engineer and county officials, including tax levies for districts and the back bill. Units for a rock crusher were bought and plans to rent and run the old high school gym were discussed.
Mrs. H. C. Joesting appointed an advisory board for the Butte Cancer Crusade Field Army. Civic, church and patriotic groups are represented as they plan talks on cancer, to be delivered by doctors before mid April. Executive committee of six local doctors led by Mrs Joesting outlined activities. The doctors are S. S. Steinberg, P. T. Sparck, P. F. Kane, H. H. James, D. E. Hale and R. F. Peterson.
St Patrick's Day events in Butte honor Patrick as a civilizing influence and founder of Irish law and schooling. Father J J O Connor lauds Patrick as apostle and statesman, noting Patrick shaped law and education, with large crowds at Silver Bow club and Finlen hotel.
In Chicago on March 16 a federal court jury condemned John Henry Seadlund alias Peter Anders to die by electric chair for the $50,000 ransom kidnapping of Charles S. Ross, a Chicago manufacturer. The verdict followed a 1 hour 30 minute deliberation after a 3:45 trial start.
War formed state fears Poland and Germany will take advantage of European ferment as tensions flare over border disputes.
A March 16 report from Kaunas notes Lithuania fears Poland may seize on European turmoil to press border disputes. Polish guard death on March 11, halted talks via Estonia, and relations remain severed for 18 years since Wilno's seizure. Lithuania warns Memel remains in dispute with Germany as Geneva considers the matter.

In London on March 16 opposition parties bitterly assailed Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain s foreign policy of perpetual drift as Foreign Secretary Halifax warned Germany to respect Czech independence. He urged Britain to honor assurances that Austria’s union with Germany is not aimed at Czechoslovakia while debates over Spain and Hitler’s moves continued.
