Lawmakers debate contracts for 22 road projects costing millions. Plans call for letting bids March 30 with funds drawn from the Public Works allotment and the remaining $7.5 million Public Works Fund.
Miles J. Cavanaugh and Charles J. Gallagher, current school board members for district No. 1, were unanimously selected as candidates to seek re election on the People’s Ticket. The meeting in Judge Riley’s court room drew about 200 as Herb Fisher chaired and W F O’Brien served as secretary. The temporary group will reconvene Monday to appoint a campaign manager and set plans. An executive committee was named.
Helena March 16 Twenty two road projects totalling about a million dollars are to be awarded March 30 by the Montana highway commission. Most funds come from the remaining 7 500 000 public works allotment and will exhaust the fund. About 87 percent of the public works money is already obligated.
A woman in a Shields avenue house hurled a rolling pin at Wil Tappio of 706 East Broadway last evening. Police arrived around 8 PM after the disturbance and Tappio, charged with drunkenness, was jailed once doctors stitched his scalp.
The forecast calls for generally fair weather in Montana Saturday and Sunday. Warmer temperatures are expected east of the divide on Saturday, with mild conditions continuing through the weekend.
Eight-year-old Hugh Galloway of Divide was struck by a car driven by John H. Bourquin a Dillon jeweler and died at Murray hospital. The boy had just alighted from a neighbor’s car after a school ride on the Dillon-Butte highway near his home. Bourquin was questioned and charged with manslaughter after a complaint signed by Mrs. Galloway and John Pilling.
Senate hearing in Washington features Col. Charles A. Lindbergh criticizing air mail contract cancellations and Clarence Chamberlain defending them as justified. Lindbergh urges private operators to restore mail flying citing U S aviation leadership.
The Farm Administration reports mailing 746,476 checks totaling 61,771,453 to wheat farmers in 37 states under the acreage reduction program. Kansas leads with 16,057,633, followed by South Dakota 3,280,774 and Nebraska 3,752,006. Montana 3,211,196. County totals list McCone 95,671 and Missoula 16,441 among others with Yellowstone continued on Page 2.
Butte marks St Patrick's Day with Wearin' of the Green as Irish groups, including the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Ancient Order of Hibernians, host events. A banquet at the Finlen hotel is sold out with 250 tickets and overflow expected. James T. Finlen Jr. will preside as toastmaster with speakers planned.
Testimony began in Judge T. E. Downey's court as three State's witnesses described the case against Richard Barry 64 accused of fatally wounding Richard Barry 34 in a homicide before a Barry County jury.
Under NRA newspaper code no boy under 16 may sell papers before 7 am or after 7 pm. The rule applies to the Standard and Saturday evening Standard on streets in Butte or Anaconda, with exceptions for carrier boys in these towns or outside areas. Notices have been served to all affected persons and employers.
Undersheriff Charles Cavanaugh died in City hospital from bullet wounds after a gun battle in Port Huron with Herbert Youngblood, an associate of John Dillinger. Youngblood died hours later. Sheriff William Van Antwerp and Deputy Howard Lohr were wounded, Lohr critical, while Cavanaugh and Fields were fading. The deathbed statement claiming Dillinger was with Youngblood kept police on alert along Michigan's St. Clair lake region.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt recalls her 29 year old wedding on St Patrick's Day aboard the Florida Special. She mentions Uncle Theodore Roosevelt giving her away and the parade delays, noting how attention shifted to the newlyweds and her bridesmaids who later visited the White House.
Greek authorities will deport Samuel Insull aboard the liner Aquitania, sailing Tuesday to New York. The fugitive faced a month in prison and a 5000 drachma fine for leaving Greece without a police visa, as officials halted his Greece to Africa escape plot.
The two day clinic at St. James hospital drew 140 children under Dr Louis W Allard of St. Vincents Billings. The Butte Auxiliary for the Rehabilitation of Crippled Children sponsored the event which plans to send 10 youngsters to Billings for operations next summer and treat many others at home under Miss Louise Schrupp.
Patrick H. Holland widely known Butteman was appointed state beer and liquor inspector by the Montana Liquor Control board. He will inspect beer licenses, investigate violations, and travel to Montana cities to enforce state liquor law. He is a longtime Butte resident and former deputy under Sheriff Larry Duggan.
The Associated Press reports eight Black people were executed yesterday in the South four for murder and four for incidents involving white girls. Three defendants admitted guilt while one protested innocence.

MISSOULA March 16 Mrs John Marble one of the first white children born in Helena died here on her golden wedding anniversary. She was born in 1868 and married in 1884 in Missoula. Survivors include husband four daughters a son and several sons in law and other relatives. Most relatives gathered for the anniversary and her Latta parents arrived from Denver in 1864.
A total of 16 913 residents are qualified to cast ballots Monday in the Butte city primary election. Polling will run from noon to 7 p.m. across 16 precincts. Walkerville is electionless as no candidates filed. The eight alderman posts will be named. 21 candidates appear on the ballot, four Republicans among them. The city general election follows on April 2.
