NASA released a pair of images from Apollo 9 showing the lunar module Spider still attached to the Saturn V third stage as the mission begins. The photos, taken from the command module with Earth’s clouds in the backdrop, illustrate the unfolding flight.
An engine room explosion sank the 580 foot freighter Vainqueur about 140 miles southwest of New Orleans near the Mississippi River mouth. Six of 34 crew were rescued by Arbitrator as search continued for lifeboats and liferaft. A separate sea search ended with a tug nearing Bermuda, all 20 aboard reported safe.
The second violent clash in two weeks pits Soviet and Red Chinese troops on Damansky Chenpao Island in the Ussuri River. Moscow and Peking trade armed provocation charges as both sides report casualties and warn of grave consequences.
Saigon faced seven rocket strikes early Sunday despite a Nixon warning. A single guard was wounded at a warehouse while a Shell petroleum dump near Nah Be caught fire. The blaze was contained within an hour amid an ongoing enemy offensive.

Montana's Senate and House plan brief Sunday sessions at 1 p.m. after a stalled Saturday, as infighting over a tax package delays adjournment. Leaders anticipate continued talks on the state budget and immediate funding for 25 offices, with caucus meetings shaping the next steps.
